Description:

WELCOME TO OUR FIRST MARINE ART PROJECT!
"BEACONS OF THE NIGHT"

For thousands of years Lighthouses have guided storm driven sailors, and explorers towards land.
They have been their guiding lights, warning them of dangerous reefs, and rocks.
These beacons of light are found all over our planet.

The La Coruna Lighthouse in Spain, is considered to be the oldest existing lighthouse in the world, and dates back to 20 B.C..
A Roman lighthouse, located on the Cliffs of Dover in the United Kingdom, dates back to 40 A.D.

The first Lighthouse constructed in the United States was in Boston in, 1716.
Sandy Hook Lighthouse, in New Jersey, is the oldest existing lighthouse in the United States.
It was built in 1764, and is still in operation today.

Join me in sharing our Lighthouses.

Please Include.......
The name of your lighthouse, and its location.
The medium you used, size of your work, and the surface you painted on.
Also, any other information you wish to share.

Limit your FINAL ENTRIES to 5.
But, take advantage of the STUDIO section to show us your progress.
No photographs or digital manipulation entries please.
If you have lighthouse photos you would like to share, please add them to the WC Library.

Remember this is the Marine Forum so I want to see WATER!

I have included some reference photos if anyone wishes to use them

1. Assateague Lighthouse, Assateague Island, Virginia.
2. Currituck Lighthouse at Corolla, North Carolina.
3. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
4. New Cape Henry Lighthouse at Fort Story, Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The links below will take you to Lighthouses from all over the world.
You can also find more lighthouse photos in the WC Reference Library.

Let's ......."Shed Some Light" on this project!

Hi Leaflin, this is going to be FUN. I love lighthouses and all they represent. Since I just discovered this new forum and project, I haven't yet selected which lighthouse. I will decide after some research. I just want to show you my support for this exciting new project.

My choice of medium is oil paints. I'll be back soon with more details and pictures. Like I said, this is going to be FUN. I look forward to meeting all participants and learning from this experience.

Best Regards

Nickel

Thanks for signing up Nickel :D
I think this is going to be a great project, and it will be a lot of fun.
I did a similar one to this three years ago, and it was interesting to see all the wonderful Lighthouses around the world.

Great !

I'm in on this one too!

I can see Scarborough Lighthouse from my window & so will be submitting a painting of that soon. I usually paint in watercolours, so maybe I'll try somthing different for this project.

I live on the south side of Michigan and am close to both the South Haven light and the Holland light and will base my painting on one of these. I think this is a great idea, to paint a something that has roots in the past and is still being used today.

Congratulations on being the very first entry in the very first Marine Art Project, Alan. Lovely watercolour. It may not be a real lighthouse but it's certainly realistic and most definitely sited where one would appear to be needed.

Delighted to be able to join in the first project of our brand new forum. The original reference drawing for this was done some years ago whilst sitting in our own boat moored in the harbour. It's not a view you will see anymore as the whole of the section where the 'Maisie' sits in the mud beside the harbour wall is now filled with floating pontoons to service the many motor cruisers.

Thanks Alan. (LOL) You're right, of course....I was wondering what wasn't quite right. Although the lighthouse building is all white I didn't put the shading in. I dry brushed a little texture in and intended to put a light wash over last thing and totally forgot.

Thanks Nina. I guess you know this old lighthouse pretty well. I'll have to look you up if we get over to Scarborough again this summer.

I was "corn"fused about the title. It should be "Lake Ear-ie Lighthouses". I tried to push the button that allows editing (within 10 minutes) but nothing happened. Any ideas on why not?

And I don't have 2 entries... it put the same one twice, but I deleted one.

Thanks, all, for the positive comments... Not sure how a printmaker would be received in a group that appears to be mostly painters!!

I was up late last night, and early this morning, and did another one... This is a drypoint of Anclote Key light, off Tarpon Springs, FL. Also posted in the Finshed projects area in high-res. The overall size of the image is only 2 x 3.

No it's not blue! OOOPS! I was trying to do the white without using white thing...its was very grey on that side of the building - looked like a bluish grey, but the blue I used was much brighter than I expected...It was quite a stormy day though, with big spots of light coming through. Kinda nice at the time doing the initial drawing.

Let me also add that this is an interesting project- with a LOT of gorgeous entries. Being a merchant mariner, Lighthouses are a daily part of my life, and while we navigate mostly by electronic means these days, there is nothing quite like seeing the beacon shine through a fog bank, telling you that you actually are where the GPS 'box' tells you that you are- It takes an incredible load off of your shoulders! Keep the lights coming, I cant wait to see more!!

Just finished this - 7" x 11" Watercolour.

I used 2 of my favourite colours in this painting - Quinacridone Gold & Cobalt Violet.

The white cliffs of Flamborough are full of caves due to their porous nature, also nearby cliffs are the home to many nesting sea birds including puffins.

Thanks Joy,

Yes, the cliffs on that parts of the coast are amazing eh? - It's a long way down when you look over the edge!

BTW Did you ever do a painting of your boat "Hippo"?

Nina

VeldaJ
04-07-2004, 10:53 AM
Do you know, it's strange, Nina but I never did. Perhaps because when you're out on a boat you take pictures of other boats not your own so you don't get to see your own boat on the water and other people photographs aren't always the ones you want to paint. Nice for memories but not necessarily inspiring.

Maybe you should, or maybe someone on WC will take it on as a challenge :D

Why not post the photo to the Image Library?

Hello All,
Love this subject and the work so far is great.
Was hesitant to enter (this is my first project contribution) but decided to dive in :D
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/index.php?cmd=browse_progress2&userid=17961&proj_id=663

This is my first seascape and as you can see I have some work left to do.
I painted the lighthouse in today and will upload new photo tomorrow.
This has been somewhat intimidating as I am doing this on my own out of an art instruction (very little instruction) book.

Is this where I'm supposed to post? Hope so. I've painted Pemiquid light several times, from at least three sides. I'm not sure if it's because I like it best, or just because I've been there the most. It is indicative of my age to look at several paintings and realize that bushes turn to trees and then dissapear, land erodes, buildings are moved or torn down and replacements constructed with alarming rapidity. Of these, I think the Isle Royale Light is the best, of course, it is also the newest, so my judgement is clouded. I have decided to paint glass in the boarded over windows, but other than that, it is done.
