Hello

I'm not in your area, but I'm in Arizona! There's a few others out there too...

There was also a member from Camp Verde here a while back, but I've not seen her in a long time.

Welcome bonnieatclassique!!

I'm in Tucson, and I know of a couple other WCer's in the Tucson area, and I know there are a few others around AZ in general (I mean aside from those posting here - hi all!)!

I'm ashamed and embarassed to say I can't recall where Cottonwood is (I've been here 20 years, it's just that we don't travel much - though this summer we are going to try some day trips and see more of our state)!

Hello Arizonians!

I'm in Bullhead City across from Laughlin, NV. Wouldn't it be great to meet together? The rooms are very reasonable at the Casinos, if you didn't mind staying there. Some ppl are Casinophobic you know  Does anyone ever get up this way?

My parents-in-law just spent Easter there (Laughlin).

At some point in the future I wouldn't mind heading up that direction. We've toyed with a Disneyland trip someday, how far is it to Anahiem from there? We just moved, so travel plans are on hiatus for the time being, but that isn't forever!

I admit I've never been big on casinos (gambling has always been pretty much boring to me), though I know there's other stuff to do and see there!

Hi Carole

Well this world does get smaller all the time doesn't it!

We drove up to Anaheim a couple of yrs ago, I believe it took about 4-5 hrs. It's a nice drive though.

I mention the casinos because there's many nice ones to stay with very reasonable rates. The Riverside's rates are normally under $20 weekdays and sometimes even as low as $10. Pretty nice..... :p The restaurants are also very reasonable, good meals, and much better priced then Vegas. Like steak and eggs for $3. Your in-laws probably know this. Do they live in AZ too? If you let me know in advance I can sometimes pick up coupons for two free nights at the Ramada, but only for weekdays. If you want to pamper yourself suites at Avi (includes a lg in-room whirlpool) for $50.

It's awful hot here during the summer, but then it's awful hot where you are too so you'll be use to it if you decide to come during the summer  Maybe we can plan a get-together with other Arizonian artists sometime. Cal too since we're so close. There's an airport here if someone would rather fly in.

They also have rooms to rent for shows, such as arts & crafts. Wouldn't it be great if everyone brought some of their work to display while we dined and chatted?

Whadaya think?

Have you been a member here long? What medium do you use?

So nice to meet you Carole,
RiverLynn

RiverLynn,

Hey neighbor! It's always cool to find those that are nearby on WC! There's one member I found out is not only in the same town, but is also a member of the local watercolor guild!

I know from my parents-in-law how inexpensive it is to stay in Laughlin, as they are "regulars" (that is when you can drag my mother-in-law away from the local casinos). That money saving feature alone makes a trip there worthwhile, sometimes just staying in a nice hotel is vacation enough! It'd be fun to have a WC "meet-up", and that is a good location to include Cal members! Maybe a regional "WC" art show is also something to look into in the future  !

I joined WC last fall, and it's been such a great resource and helps create a greater sense of legitimacy to what we do! I primarily use watercolors and acrylics, and occasionally prismacolor pencils, but this year I bought some oils and am giving them a go! I tried them nearly 15 years ago, but didn't have the patience or work ethic I do now. I have two complete oil pieces and am in the middle of my third  ! I have to admit I like it!

Lookin' forward to the summer when we can all email each other moaning and whining about the heat!

Carole

Greetings to all artists in Arizona....the West is the Best!

I am living at the south rim of the Grand Canyon...painting and teaching a few classes here. Am thinking about teaching a few plein-air workshops this summer... hotels give a discount for groups and there is always the campground .. which is very nice here BTW. Probably a 3 - 5 day event...small group...email me if interested. {address on my website}

Happy Trails! KM

Hello bonnieatclassique!!
From my ole stomping grounds!!!

I lived in Cottonwood/Jerome/Cornville for almost 20 years. I've since moved to Washington but still have fond memories of the Southwest especially Cottonwood. I remember when it was a tiny town along the river and everyone had bees and gardens and the crickets and frogs were the only things you heard at night. There were no stop lights and one road through town and the old Cottonwood Cafe was the meeting place for everyone who lived there. Sigh, those were the days. A very renown artist/sculptor John Henry Waddell lives/d in Cornville. He was fairly old back then so I do not know if he is still alive. But he had his own forge and decorated his desert landscape with life size bronze statues dancing across the hills. I was fortunate enough to have worked with him for a period of time.

I have a daughter in law in Tuscon and her mother and grandmother both are artists and they live in the Verde Valley and Flagstaff. I hope to go and visit them again perhaps next year and do some plein air. Perhaps we could meet up at that point.

I love the Dirty Verde (as it once was called). Has a special place in my heart. I could tell you some tales...

 Hi and welcome. As far as teachers go, you might check into local artists guild.... like Az. Artists Guild and see if they have any teachers listed. Some art stores have classes and some of the community colleges have both for credit classes and workshops. Just be open and you will meet folks. Gloria

The Scottsdale Artist School is still doing afternoon portrait and life classes. I THINK they have the evening as well, but they stop when it gets too hot.

That is a great starting place to meet others. The Guild has another open studio on Sunday and Monday night, I believe.
The Scottsdale Artist's League meets this week... only I forget if it is Monday or Tuesday. If you don't mind a LOT of old ladies and plenty of enthusiasm, it is a great and energetic gang. Lots of opportunities to show as well!

I go paint at IN THE RAW juice bar on weekends starting at 7 until I melt. You had best like dogs too, but come hang out and drink fruit juice.

It is really a coffe house/juice bar. I just set up and bring my own reference photos. It is off Hayden north of Via Ventura on Royal Palm.
This thread (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=193859) shows the general lay,

I am just demo'ing. The School http://www.scottsdaleartschool.org Links to the open studio (http://www.scottsdaleartschool.org/open-studio.html)
The Guild has a new site but it doesn't work at www.arizonartistsguild.org
so look into the OLD SITE (http://www.geocities.com/amarie98/gld/beforeAAGhome.html) It says..

SKETCH GROUP No instruction. Any medium. Easels and tables are provided. Fees: $7 on any Thursday or Friday for the nude model, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm. Because of possible changes, call the Guild during Sketch Group hours one week in advance to verify the schedule, or call Fred Stanford at 623 842 1232.

OPEN STUDIO PAINTING / CRITIQUE GROUP Meets every Wednesday, 7 to 8 pm. No instruction. Any medium. Fee: $2. Call Pat deWitt at 602 943 4632, or Bev Jones at 602 896 2666 for additional information.

Any help?

Hi.. I'd consider myself more of learner than an artist, but I'm in the Verde Valley. Mostly playing with acrylics and some airbrush stuff... Guess most importantly, I'm having a great time. I wish there were more workshops offered in the area than those in Sedona. If you know of any, pass the info on!

Waaal, whaddya know - the woods is full of artists out here in Zona.

I found quite a few here in Tucson & even met a few of the PHX contingent. Some of the W/C locals I've met have posted here - like Debra Jones, the non-related Toni Jones (see my tiny head) & Canvas Jockey who edited our Southwest arizona Watercolor Guild Newsletter.

Anyone travelling down towards Tucson is welcome to join me on my paint-outs. Free guide service. Just let me know when you're headed thisaway.

I have no more clue than you guys as to which are good and where to go, but I am up for exploring. From what I understand it is completely impossible to see even all the galleries on a single route so we may as well just throw a pushpin!
