I am painting a lighthouse with lake water splashing against the rocks causing whitecaps on top of the waves.Has anyone had any experience painting a scene like this?I need some help on this project. Thanks.

basically, you paint it like you see it. For where the water is white, I would paint white then add in shades of (green) then go back and highlight and define the waves and spray. I would be using both a transparent and an opaque white for this. The transparent for the misting and the opaque for the highlights of the water.
Hope this helps

Thanks Penny.I kind of thought that's what I would have to do. Just looking for an easier, softer way.But I guess the only way to learn is by doing it.Your advice is appreciated. :)

Hi dogdad
I can't be of any help but, we now have a new Marine Forum that just opened up today.
I bet the folks in there could answer your question.

Hi Alan,
I haven't done the painting with the waves yet but I just finished this painting on a carousel chariot. The chariot is part of a carousel that I'm helping to restore in Pt Dalhousie Ontario. There are two lighthouses in Port Dalhousie so I'm going to paint the smaller one on the other panel, with the waves. When I finish it I'll post a picture. :)

p.s. The picture is not the best.

What a cool project! You will have to keep us updated as the restoration goes on.

Yes it's a fun job. We've restored about 25 of the animals so far. There are over 60 animals on this carousel plus 2 chariots. We've been at it for 3 years so we've got a ways to go yet.We also have carved a lion and a horse from scratch. :)

Very nice, I agree, what a wonderful project. I would like to see more pictures of the restoration work. Did you paint this panel exclusively with the airbrush? What are you using to seal the work when you are done?

Thank you.I am using createx acrylics and Liquitex medium viscosity acrylics thinned down quite a bit to flow through the airbrush. I also used regular brushes.Mostly a #1 round. It will be sealed with 3 coats of polyurethane. :)

Thanks Maryl.Yeah it won't stay nice very long,as soon as the kids start jumping on it.But the kids are who we're restoring the carousel for.The subject for the next chariot is sailboats ,so that should be interesting to paint. The carousel is about 100yards from Lake Ontario,so that why we have a nautical theme. :)

Hey Dogdad, this chariot looks really great !!
My son Jeff, who's way into digital art, just happened to run across this pic tonight just after I read your post. Thought it might inspire you.

heheheheh
I set the pic as my wallpaper. DOH. copyright violation. hehehe nah.
Well, digital is more forgiving since nothing is permanent and if you want to darken an area - click a button. So many functions that can't be done painting it on real paper or canvas. I especially like the light/dark areas of the wave pic. Thanks for posting the link.

I was thinking a sponge might do a great job. sponge on some white then do some airbrush work over the top of that....that's how i would do it.....Rod-Man
