I started this from a ref i found in the lib....being a bit ambitious i think....it's a black & white photo so i am doing it in just 1 colour....neutrel.....don't know weather that's the right thing to do or not....but i guess thats how you learn...the trouble is all my family thought it was a pencil sketch....do you think it will change when i get the darks in......c&c please

Keep on going, it's a very nice composition you have started. Perhaps you should introduce one more subtle colour (van-dyk or something similar  ) for the cat itself.

Just choose one of the darker brown colours in your palette.

You've done a wonderful job with the cat's reflection in the window. The drawing also looks very good.

You can mix a brown with red and green if you don't have brown and want to use it for the cat.

You've got a wonderful start on this. I wouldn't do anything more to the reflection.... it's perfect already. I say go ahead with the monochrome idea.... maybe it's a black and white cat, after all! :cat:

This is going to make a great painting! As far as colour goes, why not set this aside for finishing later. Experiment by starting again on another piece of paper. and choose any colour(s) you want for the cat...go wild! It will always be recognizable as a cat! If it looks colourful and you and others love it, then it's a success! You might find you won't have to go back to finish the first one. At the very least it will tell you where you can or cannot go from here. I've had this happen to me before and wished my experiment had been on better paper.

Thanks so much to all for the encouragement and support, i would have probably given up by now......brian thanks for the advice, but i don't think i could do another one, this is way beyond anything i've tried before, and i have'nt the courage yet to do loose style painting.....maybe after this i'll try

Went over the top on the reflection...bit dark, but the cats almost black so hope when thats finished it won't look so bad....And I pick up my new glasses tomorrow (lost the old ones) so i might be able to see what i'm doing.

This is how far I got today......lost most of the drawing on the cat, so a bit slower

I'm so glad you let me know you were using a photo I submitted to the reference library. I always loved the photo but didn't feel like drawing it myself, and I think watercolor is an excellent medium for it. I think you're doing an absolutely wonderful painting of it, and you've captured the mood very well. I can't wait to see what it looks like in the end!

Latest progress....Didn't get much done today......hope to finish it tomorrow.......there goes that housework again......can't get all the pic on the scanner..and it's better than my camera...perhaps someone could explain to me how to do it in 2 parts and put together ( in easy terms please)
on PSP 8.

Oh i forgot....Whatman 140lb, WN Artist, and such an assortment of brushes you wouldn't believe.

Totally agree with Mary-Ann, your monochrome kitty is wonderful. I am really impressed with how you did its fur.

Masking fluid is very hard to make fine lines with—the only thing I have found that works fairly well is the Masquepen. They are made there in England. If you don't have one, its worth getting for fine details like the whiskers on the cat.

Sylvia.........Thanks very much ........and what is a masquepen i've never heard of one.....seen them mentioned here.

Stephie,

Some very clever inventor there in England came up with a plastic bottle of masking fluid with a needlenose tip for applying the masking fluid. What makes it so nice is that there is a top with a fine piece of metal that goes down into the tip and keeps it from clogging whenever you close it.

The point is cut at a slant so it is quite easy to get fine, thin lines of masking fluid whenever you want one. I would imagine most art stores in England would carry them. I ordered mine through the Daniel Smith catalog here in the States. It is called Masquepen with Fine Point Applicator by the Cruddas Innovations Company U.K. Ask in the Daily Wash where one of the Brits who come there got theirs.
