A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Pastel Retrospective 2003
Project Leader: sundiver
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

The Pastel Retrospective 2002 project was a big success .(http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=389
Another year has gone by, with new members coming on board, lots of lively discussion and experimenting, a big increase in the use of oil pastels, and most important, lots and lots of pastel paintings.
It\'s time to select 1-3 pastel paintings that you did in 2003, and post them here so we can showcase the year. You may choose them because you like them, learned a lot doing them, or other reasons of your own.
Please comment a little bit on each one that you choose to share with us.

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=646)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get \"pushed down\" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Oh, rats. I didn't start with pastels til 04. :(

oooohh! Good one Monica! Can I use that too? I can make it work 'cause *technically*, I didn't get the Schminckes until '04- nor the Wallis, come to think of it....

bwa-haa-haa. You know what this means, though -- we won't have any excuses for next year's. :D

This should be fun to do! How can one pick among so many favorites?

Good challenge Barb - get those lurkers in here and newbies, you post too. There had to be something you did in pastels in '03!

Monica and SBJ - :crying:

awww Kat- now you've gone and made me feel guilty over making you feel sad.... dang it anyway. I'll go look, promise. (But I still say that's a good excuse....)

Okay, I'll sign up! Shouldn't be hard for me to choose, I only did 3 pastels in 2003. This will be an easy project, the work is already done!

Cool bananas! I started pastelling a year ago yesterday so more or less ALL my stuff is from 2003 :D I remember seeing the retrospective from 2002 and wishing I could have taken part.

Wendy, I hope you won't mind me putting a link here to last year's as for some reason the one you posted isn't working.

What a beautiful piece of art! I wasn't around when you did this, really glad for this project so I can see everything I missed. Such a moody piece, really captures an introspective moment that everyone is familiar with. Done with the Senneliers? Thanks for remembering that E-J - you must have an amazing memory. Yes, my "tinyhead" trees won an award and it was my first painting to sell. It is hard to pick just three favorites isn't it - they are all like children - something you enjoyed doing, sweated and pained over, agonizing over whether it looks right - sounds like childbirth doesn't it :D

This is a terrific painting Madder, and it's no wonder you and the dog owners were happy with it. I love the play of light here, you've got a nice range of values. I especially like the way you rendered his eye. Maybe you don't consider yourself an accomplished artist, but after looking at your painting, I sure do!

P.S. - you have this in the progress images, wasn't sure if you were aware of that.

I must say I disagree with your disappointment in the skin tones in this work. I particularly like the light effect on her shoulder, how the shadow plays on her face, and especially the way the painting is cropped. Just having her face partially turned into the painting gives a very sexy and alluring attitude - an emotion very difficult to bring across well.

This is very well done.

Oh I'm an idiot. I realize it's called VIrgo. Love the colors used. At first I thought it was a leaf. Do you have one for Sagitarius?

Maggie - those reflections are wonderful. I like the ones in the front of the painting, but there is one special one in the back on the left that reflect the golden yellow of the seagrass.

THis is lovely. I think the distant mountains work because even though they are relatively dark, they still are much lighter than the rest...there is no question that they are off there somewhere.
BEautiful colors...I like that bit of green poking through on the left.

Soap,

This is exquisite. Your lighting and use of contrast are masterful. The child's pose is charmingly natural, her skin translucent, and her hair and kerchief a lesson in how to paint. No wonder it sold -- what a pleasure to view.

Sophie, that is a terrific picture, a real lesson in less is more, and a marvellous pose, so characterful. I love the black background, helps to make a strong piece even stronger. Did you use black paper, and leave it showing, or did you paint it black?

Hi Jackie
sorry for the late reply, I was on holiday.......
Thanks!!!
It was not painted on black paper (as I usually do not plan to make something black like this from the start :D). So I painted it black.
