I would like to find someone in Los Angeles to work with individually on classical figure drawing. I'm a very motivated beginner and finding it hard to learn from books and even classes. I'm taking a class now; the things it's covering are things I want to learn, but the teacher is racing through each element of figure drawing so quickly that I'm not able to really get anywhere. It's more frustrating than anything else. I'd really like to find a helpful, supportive and patient teacher who is good at explaining things and can help me where I'm stuck. Can anyone recommend someone? Or maybe you yourself? I'm willing to pay for the instruction, of course. The best area for me is west Los Angeles or thereabouts. PS: Is this an okay thing to do here? If not, I'd be very appreciative if someone can suggest another way to accomplish this. Thanks.

I don't know about a one-on-one situation, but you might check out the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art. They're located in Van Nuys.

There are some good instructors there.

Coyote: thanks. I'm actually taking 2 classes there right now (for the first time - I just learned about the school recently). It is very high caliber, and the teachers' own work is incredible. But what I'm finding is that there's just a little individual attention per class, because the classes are large enough that the teacher only gets to you maybe twice in 3 hours, and then only for a couple of minutes. Also, as we all know, being a gifted teacher is a talent in itself. I'd love to find that teacher that could help me in the way I learn (since we all learn differently), rather than in more general and less personal way they teach a group. This isn't a criticism of LAAFA - it's the best art academy in L.A., at least that I know of (and I've looked). It's more me, specifically - 1to1 is my best way of learning.

You might want to check out Mission Renaissance. They have a studio in West LA. Their approach is classic. There are about 10 students per class with each progressing at their own pace. If you want more specifics, feel free to send a PM.

I live in west LA and may be willing to help. But, I checked your profile and noticed you haven't posted any of your work... I would like to see something, and am likely to decline if you're not somewhat developed/ showing a basic grasp. You can check my profile/posts here in wc, and email me via my profile, if I seem to have the grasp you'd expect from a teacher.
