A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Self Expression
Project Leader: Dyin
Relative Difficulty: Medium
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Portrait
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Who are we? We know that we are complex beings, much more than skin and bone. Artists try to capture their feelings and emotions almost as soon as they pick up their first crayon and draw stick figures representing themselves. We know, even then, that we donít look like that, but are using that as a representation of ourselves.

This self-portrait project is intended to get you thinking about your emotions and inner self, as well as your outer appearance. I want to encourage you to try and express yourself and feelings through a portrait of yourself. You may do this by conveying a certain expression in your facial features, by using certain colors to express mood OR even express yourself without any physical resemblance to the face you see in your mirror. There is no right or wrong in a self-portrait, it is you coming out in your artwork, and there is no one more familiar with that person than yourself.

I recently completed a self-portrait that catches a mood of time and place, in order to put a certain aspect of my life into perspective. It opened my eyes to a different approach and gave deeper meaning to my work. I am hoping you will think about the artist/person within and try to paint in whatever style needed to convey who you are to yourself, and then share with us. Please share with us your methods, the self you are expressing and the feelings you had when you painted this self-portrait.

Remember, you donít have to be a portrait artist to do this project, you only need to express yourself by stretching your mind around a concept. I am providing some website links to give you food for thought, and some examples of famous self-portraits. Have fun!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=636)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get \"pushed down\" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Hello Dyin,

thank you very much for starting this project and providing these interesting
links. Only recently I discovered how many selfportraits I have done
over the years .. mostly as a self observation study. I did only one in pastels
so I`ll join the project trying to find out what`s going on with me nowadays :)

powerful and revealing. Especially interesting is the atmosphere and "ungroudedness" (?) behind both heads...being consumed but being nowhere.

Actually, I think this project is a learning experience, and the more examples we see then the more the wheels will turn! I think it's just fine to enter examples that you've done and like, and please tell us what you were trying to convey and the feelings you remember! Look forward to seeing!

Angie...my you are pretty! You can totally see the playful mood you are in. I like how you did the hair colors too. One of my problems with self portraits is I wish I was 30 years younger lol! Or if I have to paint my half century self, couldn't I have more character???? You did a lovely job on this, and the eye actually lends an ironic look to the piece.

This is so different from my approach with oilies, but I love the boldness and am impressed with the Sennelier handling...did you use the turps just for wiping back? Did you use any tools, or do much blending in the end stages? I like the strength of this....you are looking forward but eying what's beside you. This is very in the moment, and not like Van Gogh's work, but it has that urgency to get it down....thank you so much for joining this project..I knew I would like what you did!

I have been eyeing this piece that's your icon ever since you started posting on the forum. It has a very fascinating design to it. And I've been wanting to do an abstract self portrait...I did one years ago, but not in pastel. It was very much a thing of the moment. So, part of this project is to explain what you are trying to convey and how you felt as you did it. I hope it's not too personal that you can't share it with us. Interpreting someone else's work is not very accurate but I can tell you what I feel from it. I find it unusual to have so many neutral colored areas. Blue is a calming color, but it's split in half. Red is a passionate, maybe angry color and it surrounds what is being pushed out at great force. And I find it interesting that it all goes down to a small pink area. So it makes me feel like there's a lot of colorful action but deep inside there's a vulnerability. Whether any of this is what you meant, I don't know...but this is what I got studying it.
Thanks for joining the project, this is a strong piece.

Hello, I used only a piece of cloth to rub over the painting to get a
kind of faded appearance after I had bruhes over it with the thinner
Towards the end I did not blend physically. I used
pure colors : blue yellow, 2 different greens, black white and pink + indian red.

I think this is very difficult to paint an abstract self-portrait. I still can not understand how did I do it....

So, part of this project is to explain what you are trying to convey and how you felt as you did it.

You got all right. The main target was to show how small bits of inspiration and good feelings trying to get through the concrete boredom....

I dont want yall to think I am crazy so I will tell you that my brother who up until a year ago was an upstanding man who cared most about his family has become addicted to a horrible drug called oxycontin- he is in rehab as off 3 nights ago. No need to speak of it anymore.

I thought it was interesting that you picked up on the little girlness of the painting - that wasnt my intention but yes I can see what you are saying. I will finish it today if I get half a chance.

I can't wait to see the final pastel version..did you feel good about this representation of yourself, meaning do you think you captured what you were feeling? I see a good man with a lot of sadness and resignation but can see strength showing through too. I like the cocked eyebrow look too...like you are questioning what you see. Very nice piece.

hi--I'm new to WetCanvas, but this sounds like a great project! I am kicking around some ideas--I just started painting (acrylics) about 1 1/2 years ago, and haven't touched pastels since high school, so this will be a challenging jump-start for me. Very expressive stuff posted so far!

Guilli - it's lovely to know what you look like without your apron on or whatever it was on that previous tiny head.

Looking great!!! Not sure you need to go over with pastels - I think you need to draw it again and then have two pieces!!!

I've just signed up for this project - and read through all the comments. Must say how impressed I am with all the paintings - so expressive, full of emotion; doubt very much that I'll be able to convey anything even half as powerful. I'ts over 40 years since I attempted a self portrait but I'm willing to 'give it a go'! I guess it's a question of "watch this space" ( said very humbly).
Cheers

Hi again!
I got mine as finished as it is going to be, but am having difficulties with image size (too big) and deciphering our scanner--will try to upload it tomorrow. I found that I tried to cram too much information and detail into too little space with the pastels. I'm used to either a decent sized canvas (acrylics) or a 0.3 mm mechanical pencil! So it's no work of art this time, just an expression of chronically very mixed feelings--I love my life, and trying to do this art thing, but I still struggle with patience and ACCEPTANCE of chronic illness! oh well....

Dyin
02-04-2004, 11:15 PM
Sorry you're having trouble uploading your work. Sizes can't be larger than 500 pixels for the largest measurement and they should be a jpeg. The scanner...can't help lol! If you have problems in the morning send me a private message...all you have to do is click on my name in the reply and then send a message, I'll do what I can to help. Am really looking forward to seeing it!

Guilli, you did an excellent job of explaining it. Yes, I thought the Fibromyalgia was locking me up, but I realized I was LETTING it. In other words, I hurt all the time and I thought it was an excuse for a self pity party. And negative begets negative...until I was so far in the dumps and so hurting it never ended. But that's changed since I've done this. Because the other side of the coin is positive begets positive. I can't afford self pity. And lucky me, that is the ONLY negative thing in my life...and why should it control my mood when I have friends and family to enjoy? So by taking all that negative emotion and setting it on paper I was able to put it in perspective...now when it wants to creep up on me I go look at this and say...back in your cave, beast!
Thanks very much for taking the time to explain your feelings, it's much appreciated. :)

A self portrait expression not to proud to share... Unfortunately I went through some very angry times last year due to grieving the loss of my dear friend and sister. She has been gone now for almost six years but somehow the anger gripped me last winter the hardest... this painting was my plea for peace... aptly titled "Tired of Being Angry".

Oh geez, this so captures your anger and despair that i just want to cry. You almost look lost in a spacesuit of misery...this angry little being that can't explode out the way it wants to. And so it internalizes. wow. Am so very sorry you lost your friend and sister (very telling that you said friend first) and so sorry you felt like that. I sure hope it's better now. And that painting this helped put it out of you. Thank you so much for sharing such a personal moment with us...it's kind of humbling.

Stoy, I think you did a great job of expressing yourself with this. The colors are a perfect match for mood and I like the 'cartoonish' style....perhaps you are boxing yourself in by trying to repress that side of you???? This is pretty powerful, and although features are exaggerated, I don't think it's really cartoonish...I think it's very effective and much more evocative than it might have been done realistically. I like this a lot.

If I'm mistaken, I apologise, but if it's digital or another medium then it's not eligible for this project which is pastel only. Although if it is mixed with pastels, that would be ok. Dyin, interesting observation! I'm not sure why I might be repressing. 14 years ago, I did a large piece in this style of drawing and won awards that put my piece in the National Arts Caucus in Washington DC. It now hangs over my mother's fireplace. Needless to say, I was quite proud of it and set to work on other pieces, but nothing seem to pan out and abandoned it all together, until this project. Dreaming up content still troubles me and that is why I seem to like portraits and figure drawing, subjects are more immediate and set before me. Hmm..

Angie, you are so kind! Thankyou. It is reassuring to find common bonds in others by seeing their works and sharing and I'm glad to do so with you and the rest.

Well, really think the frustration might be coming through in other areas of your work. It's hard to dream content, I must admit...and so will most who join this project...but the thing is to at least try to combine emotion with subject...lately, not on all work, but much of it, I have been saying what can I do differently with this subject and I take it to photoshop and try all sorts of effects. Rarely do I do it anything like those exaggerations but I find I'm seeing things a little differently, if in nothing else, composition and color. They always say acknowledgement leads to change, so can't wait to see where you go now that you've opened that door again!

Guilli...I love the dualness of this...one side is so worn and sad and the other side is bravely fighting to absorb the sadness and go one with a smile. You have come so far with your portraits and you have a unique style that is trying to come out...wonderful piece....and very glad you re-did it in color.

teehee...you called it elf portrait....how cute....and it DOES look like you!!!!! and gasp! you have a background!!!! I love how it's coming along...and it looks like it's putting you in touch with a new way of looking at things...and THAT is the whole object of this project!!! I can't wait to see the end result of this...and I can see where your kids get their good looks from! :D

You are too sweet, Sue. I have to thank you for putting this project together, it has definitely broken me out of my tight little box. And it's really enjoyable viewing everyone's work. I didn't call it elf portrait though, I called it A New Me, because I'm hoping to stay out of that box now that I've escaped it! Thanks so much for the encouragement, you make such a great project leader!

Darn it, Eileen...I thought I posted to this! I saw in the jpeg you uploaded that it was called elf portrait as part of the URL...I like New Me better...but it WAS cute! I don't think once you're out of the box that you can go back in...it's sort of like de-lurking...you can't go back!
I can't wait to see the final on this...
Hey....do you always leave the eyes til last? Or are you doing as Stoy thought...leaving them that way?

eileenclaire

Stoy, thank you, this is actually a work in progress, I'm not finished yet. But you have me thinking about how I want to do the eyes now.

Sue, I usually put the eyes in after I work on the skin tones. But I don't finish them up completely till the very end, they're my favorite part and I like to save the best for last!

Hi...well, I"ll get on your good side right away by saying...you're 49??? Your eyes in this piece really look like you are looking ahead to something with great determination. Which definately goes with what you said. I think you were smart to take some time for yourself and your art, and maybe you need to do that on a regular basis, set aside time just for you so you can develop. I love how you used the complements you did...thats a nice green and it keeps you looking strong in the center. I'd like to see more of your work after seeing this too...I like how you caught your face and let the rest just flow. Thanks for sharing this with us, I'm pretty excited that this project seems to be a diving board for jumping in new directions...I hope you find the time you need!

Hello,

I think this is a real nice project. I've made the time to go in this project.
I want to make three or four the same self portrets each in his own color which gives my different moods. And wheni can find the time a final piece which puts these moods together.
When I've a start I will post them.

Thanks Diyan, yep 49! The age is cool, I am quite fine with that. I deserved every age step in the process. The hardest part is my oldest girl is going to be 30. Now that makes it a different story :) I really wasn;t too happy with this one, but I think it was more about really looking at myself. So this energy is one of self reflections and self care. Your right about taking time out. I used to do 4 days out every quarter to just rejuvenate. I stopped doing that. I decided after this week that I am going to do it again. Thanks again. Maybe since its early in the month I will try one more, not so serious. vf :D

I had to go out and buy myself a new lipstick after this experience in close self-scrutiny! And isn't that a trial these days! I didn't know makeup had become so hi-tech  :D
I'm not real happy with this one - I don't think it really says much because I approached it more as an experiment in style - not as a true output of self. So I hope to have another go tomorrow, on bigger paper.

look at all the pretty colors!!!! (Can you tell I'm a child of the sixties?) I can see what you were trying to do with the technique...maybe Diyart can help you out there...I like how you added the objects to make it personal...is that an Aries ram on the coffee cup?? I got up away from my monitor and it really melds at a distance and I really like that dash of blue in the eyes! I think since we're artists that style of painting is also self expression, so it's still interesting in how you chose to approach it.

Kate Schechter is a character in one of Douglas Adams' (sad loss) novels, The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul. She experienced a time of unconscious/sub-conscious mind activity after a blast, and while she heard that people tended to only use 1/10th of their brain, she could not recall hearing that the other 9/10ths was occupied by penguins, as hers seemed to be.
Well I'm with Kate! Coz my head seems to be stubbornly occupied by penguins too - the toy kind :D :D

Wow...Harm....you look almost angry here (they say red is a passionate color)!!! But it looks very, very interesting...perhaps you could tell us your thought progress as you work?
Also...if you wouldn't mind, would appreciate you posting this in the project itself....in the very first post on this thread there is a link. Once there you click on sign up for project. Then you can click on My Project page....then you upload this with your comments in the progress entries...when you're done, you post that one in the Finaly entries...if you need help, holler! This way the whole Wet Canvas community can share, as many people don't come to this thread, but go there to view comments and see the work! Thanks...and really looking forward to seeing this progress!

Your work takes on a new dimension when you do and this piece shows that you are having a great time with it. You ought to do it more!

Cj, thanks for your comments on my portrait earlier. Lol, it is deep!..and much can be said with your new piece! This is great! You depicted being trapped in a world of "kids" quite accurately. You look desperate and that adds to the whole mood of this. Colors are perfect as well.

Oh, Cin...your first ever!!! Rays of hope for sure...inspiration definately!!! It's really cool having the one eye ghosted like that too, like you are beginning to see something that was hidden from you. The rose is barely detectable, sort of like you are just beginning to get some color back, which is really relative to how sick you've been. This is a great piece and I know you've worked a lot on self portraits for study, for me, this is the first one that really said something about you...and thanks so much for joining this project!!!

Hi Harm...am loving this blue background...after (and if) you make the changes you want be sure and put it in as a final entry....which you can do with each of your pieces when you call them done...what I think is bothering you is that you have a different line for each of your features....if you hold your first three fingers out and spread them and hold them up in front of the portrait you'll see what I mean...but, since you seem to be looking upwards with a grimace of anger on your face, it works ok, being distorted...usually the corner of the mouth falls somewhere close to under the iris of your eye...but that's in a natural expression....perhaps if you darken as you go to the corners it will look better. Could you tell us what this emotion is for you? I think it is a very powerful image...rage at the fates? The blue background is like you do have some outside calming influence on your life...very interesting and can't wait to see more!

Hello

Thanks for the help.
I first wanted to do the background also red. but while I was drawing I thought its my emotion and the emotion is in the person not in your envirement. Red is for me anger with passion. You go for something with your heart even if your envirement doesn't feel like it the same.

Greetings Harm

I think maybe the hearts by the ears isnt all that surprising... probably you hear with your heart all the time. Both of your portraits portrayed (to me at least) a sensitive almost childlike apperance. A person with a heart if you will. I am willing to bet that since your hearing loss you have away of looking deeper at people to see if you are missing what they are saying and that means you are hearing better than us because most folks assume they hear everything anyway!

Knowing you, I think it is rays of hope and the rose is a transition to color that you are facing. Don't fear it and the mistakes you make with it, it can be a valuable teacher! You are so right Stoy, it is rewarding to work from life. And I'd like to do it more, but I mainly do portraits of children. It's very convenient to use photos, they just can't sit still for any length of time.

Sue, that is a black cloud hanging over my head, but it was nothing intentional or symbolic, I just threw colors every which way that I used in the figure. There was no method to my madness there, so I'm glad you like the bg. "Determined" is a good way to describe me, I'm glad you see it in there.

Thanks for the compliment, VF, I appreciate your comments!

I find this a very good self portrait   because :

1. the proportions of the head are captured very good
2. color and drawing execution are very homogenous and therefore the portrait has strong impression on viewer
3. most important for me is the very convincing eye and forehead area
which is almost speaking. Most of the human faces are asymetrical, but only very few people show this.
This face expresses for me : live experience ..high and low
humor and thoughtfulness and still curiosity
I like the smile which is not only in the lips but also in the eyes, there is a bit of self-amusement.
4. even though the neck is not visible too much is is well done and contributes a lot to the 3 dimensional effect, which is a bit reduced by the flat light on the face.

These two are very interesting...I see a version of you that holds on to a passionate past and a version that is more calm and centered now, but maybe missing that past a little...this exploring ourselves is kind of addictive, isn't it? Someone is in a rare good mood today! That's colored pale blue pencil on a pearl gray toned ground...plus I took it after the light started going...but it's getting real colorful now, so maybe you should look at some sunglasses instead!!! :p :D

Great portrait, and in such a short time! I think the you on the right is looking rather skeptical, the you on the left is appears somewhat bemused about it all. I am blown away by how quickly you did this, what is your secret??!!!
Hi Eileen and thanks! It really was done v quickly and is only a sketch. Sometimes I'm like that - at others it takes me hours! :)

As long as the main portion is pastels, that's fine...I did the sketch I'm working on now in colored pencil, I sometimes use gouache as a background and also use prismacolors with my OPs for details...join up and have fun!

lol...thanks Eileen and Charlie's Mum too...I can't believe how fun it is, even though I've had moments....like trying to get those stupid glasses close! I'm always fascinated by paintings that are rich in color..I can see subtle tones, but never been brave enough to start splashing, or if I was, muted it back down again...so this is a controlled way to try stretching that way...it's fun to have something in your head and work it out though!

I just discovered this pastel project and still have to look at the gallery and so forth.

I have looked at the research links and I must say I was engrossed by the site which looked at portraits through history and the reasons for doing a self-portrait. Many thanks for including this link.

I am interested to join in this project so I will now go look at the exhibits.

The eyes in this portrait are very engrossing/engrossed. I like the bright colours and also dare I say it? the look of despair!! Well, that's what I thought the look said, especially after reading the next portrait of yours with the info about stay-at-home mums.

I think its a very striking image...the first portrait.

Your second portrait is more playful, I thought.

How do you get pastel to STICK on acrylic?? Is it soft pastel and a thin acrylic wash? Or is it oil pastel??

Hello,

These oilpastels are 12,5 x 18 inches, for me its small. Mostly I draw on paper of 20 by 25 inches. Perhaps The final drawing I go to make in that size.
The colors are chosen to complet eachother.

Thanks for your comments Monkey. Though I have absolutely no regrets about being a stay-at-home Mum, I do get my moments - and they always pass.
For the acrylic underpainting I used thinned down acrylic paints that were splattered and poured, so that the tooth of the paper (being a sanded card)was still very strong. And I used mainly Sennelier soft pastels, the softest that I own. I had absolutely no problem with the pastel sticking, to the point where I put so many layers on that I completely covered the acrylic wash unfortunately.
Next time I will have to retrain myself from getting too carried away! :D

Thanks Eileen! Good question and I'm not so sure. I have no problems having people to paint and enjoy the learning process as well as the excitement of getting closer to doing better work. However, doing exaggerations comes more natural, but the subjects inwhich to paint that style is far and few inbetween leaving me to struggle. It is more than painting a person in that style, it is also knowing what to "say" with form and color, which this project is perfect for. I'm working on both and seeing which one will take me futher. I posted this pic at pastel forum and you can see my reference pic there and realize how long I made my nose, Lol!

I really enjoy the bold strokes of color around the face. Combined with the directness of the eye contact, it gives one the feeling of extreme and personal contact. The colors are almost the waves of energy and emotion that are felt rather than seen. The personal items are like a memory. You associate a person with objects and then the recognition kicks in.

I enjoy looking at this very much.
