Hey there. This is my first time trying to do an underpainting and then glaze (or just go opaque on top, I suppose). I guess I have a little experience doing that, as I usually start out an alla prima portrait with a grayscale block-in. But, I'm tryin this out. I'm painting it trying to use the sight size method, but my parents moved the freakin easel, so I couldn't get it back to where it originally was. This means that I can't measure things horizontally anymore, which makes me not trust measuring it in the 1:1 ratio anymore either. So, I'm stuck basically doing comparitive measuring again... and I was starting to like that sight-size stuff, even if I don't know the "proper" way to do it. haha.

Oh yeah, I'm trying this out like the guy from flemishrealism.com does. I noticed he paints things in sillhoutes first, and then he adds in values. I don't know the correct way to do this, as I guess this is sort of considered "grissaille." (At least, that's what I'm trying to do). Not really sure about the RIGHT way to do this.

anyways, here ya go:

I'll be watching with interest! I know nothing about any of these methods, so can't comment anymore than that. :)

Hi Keith. Uh oh. You have some grapes in there to wrestle with! Gawd it was torturous the last time I tried them! lol.

Dont worry too much about the sight-size. You already have enough established to carry-on with comparative measuring. You might want to mark your viewspot AND easel location with tape next time. Its a good habit that I have gotten into.

Its great that you are working with negative space. Its well suited to get your blockin set down solidly. Are you using any mediums for the glazing? My instructor uses Pontifex (http://www.marogermedium.com/), Italian Maroger (matte) but they also have a Flemish formula that is glossy. I have some ordered and on the way! Looking forward to seeing you progress.
