Welcome, welcome! I am happy you are interested in our library, and I hope the following helps you out!

These are some helpful hints, tips & tricks you may find useful for our library:

What is the library?

The WC! Reference Image Library is a collaborative effort by our members to create a photographic reference database, to help other members in creating their own works of art.

Where do I find the library?

You may access the library by clicking on "ImageLib" at the top of any WC! page, or by following this link: Reference Image Library (http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/)

Where should I go if I have questions about the library?

The Contribution Guidelines (http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/contribute.html) gives a lot of helpful information on adding to our library.

The Library FAQ (http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/faq.html) will answer a lot of your questions in regards to copyright and ownership of images.

With regards to our library forum, please respect the guidelines found here: Guildelines for the library forum (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157758) .

How do I upload images into the library?

Once you enter the library, you will find a link on the upper right hand side that says "Upload Photos". Clicking on that link, will bring you to a screen where you can upload.

It is very important that you follow all these steps. Doing so will help insure that our library remains organized, so that other members can find the images you are contributing.

First, select a category. There are lots of categories there to choose from. Do not force-fit a category...if you need a category and have images to support it, drop a note here in this forum and we'll see about adding it in.

Next, select your file from your computer. Images can be up to 2500x2500 pixels in size, and a good rule of thumb is try to keep the maximum size of your images 500-600K in file size. A good minimum file size would be to follow our forums guideline, which is 500x600 pixels and under 100K in size. Remember, the smaller the file size, the less you are giving folks to work from. You can Zip your uploads, as long as each picture matches the maximum guidelines AND your total zip file is not larger than 2MB.

Next, click on "Upload/Submit". This may take a few minutes, depending on your file size and your connection.

Wait, you aren't done yet!

On the next screen, you need to make sure you are adding the appropriate information. Make sure to give it a title, a description and good keywords, so that others may be able to locate your pictures when they are doing a keyword search. This is extremely important that you don't skip this step! Finally, click on submit again and your images will be uploaded.

If you do contribute to our library, we ask that you remember the following:

1. The photograph needs to be taken by you, or you can certify that the photograph is 100% copyright free.

2. The photograph needs to be clear. Fuzzy or out-of-focus photographs do not make good reference material.

3. Note: Member artwork is not suitable for the reference image library. This library contains images to be used as reference for the creation of new artwork.

4. The photograph needs to be large enough to be usable by our members. After all, these are references, we need to be able to see what we are looking at.

5. WC! reserves the right to change categories, add keywords, or delete items that are inappropriate for our library in order to continue to have a well organized database for our members to use.

I got an email saying my image was removed from the library...why?

The number one reason for photos being deleted from the library is becase a member has uploaded artwork into the library. Other reasons may include posting otherwise copyrighted images, images that are abusive, offensive, obscene or otherwise violating the WC! user agreement are removed. Nudes are not currently accepted into the library. Images that are logos, articles, banners or other forms of advertisement are not suitable for the library, and will be removed.

What if I see something inappropriate in the library? Or what if I uploaded the wrong photograph? Or what if I put it in the wrong category?

If you see something you feel is inappropriate, out of place, or just needs changed, under each photo, you will find a link that says "Report this photo". Click on that, and submit your reasons why, and I will take a look at it. These reports are private and come directly to me, and it comes complete with a direct link to the photo you are talking about. I will take a look as soon as I can, and respond as appropriate.

Do I need to ask permission before creating art from a photo in the library?

The person who uploaded the image granted that they own the copyright to the image and that the general public may use it. This is taken from the user agreement:

With respect to Content you submit to the Reference Image Library, you grant the general public the perpetual, irrevocable license to use, distribute, reproduce, modify, adapt, publicly perform and publicly display such Content for any purpose. You furthermore agree that you exclusively own the license to grant the general public the right to use, distribute, reproduce, modify, adapt, publicly perform and publicly display such Content for any purpose.

As a result, you do not need to ask permission, but you may want to verify and double check with the poster of the image before using the image for a commercial purpose to ensure there are no problems.

What makes a good reference to add to the library?

The following discussion, Rating Photographs in the Library (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159418), will give you a good idea of what others think makes for a good reference to add to the library. Any member may rate and comment on a picture. These options are below each full sized photo.

What other tools does the library offer?

The library offers a variety of tools to help you select just the right reference for your next project.

In addition to searching by categories, and doing in depth searches of keywords, or by member's names, you can sort your results in many ways. The sort feature is found on the top right hand side, and offers a variety of ways to sort the images you've searched for.

The library offers easy viewing from picture to picture. You will find buttons at the top of a picture, marked "Prev Image" "Slideshow" and "Next Image". Below each full sized picture, you will see 5 thumbnails as well. You may click on those to jump forwards or backwards within your results.

Under each photo, you will find more information about the photo. One area you may want to check out, is called "Simulation Options". Clicking on one of those options, gives you a fun way to preview and print a picture if you like, in one of the following modes: Impressionistic | Pointillistic | Black & White | Monochrome | Charcoal | Line . Try some of these out and see for yourself!

If you find a photo that you are particularly fond of, you can save it to your favorites folder. Under each photo, is a link marked "Add to Favorites". Click on that, and it will be added to your favorites. To see all of your favorites, click on the link on the top left hand side, called "My Favorites". They will remain there until you remove them, again by clicking on the link under the photo that states "Remove from Favorites".

A great new feature of the library, is the ability to download (via a zip file) your favorites. When you click on "My Favorites", you will find a "download" button at the top left hand side. You may of course save a single file to your computer if you wish, by right clicking and selecting "save as" and save it to your hard drive. The download ability gives you flexibility in saving multiple pictures that you may wish to have.

How can I request a specific image?
See our Guildelines for the library forum (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157758) for how to request a specific image.

What if I have any other questions about the library?
If you have any questions at all, please drop a new post in this forum, and we'll be happy to help you out.

Thanks again so much for your interest in our library!

How long do I have to wait for photos to be approved in the Image Library.
I have photos which have had "Image pending approval" on for 24 hours, so I am wondering how much longer I have to wait to see whether they will be added to the library.

Many thanks.
