Is my pop up killer software failing me, or is there some sort of new type of pop-up out there now?? I seem to get an annoying pop up window almost every time I go to Ebay or MSN. Does anybody know about this?

Thanks

Hi Sherry, I haven't heard anything about any new pop-ups, but the way technology is moving I wouldn't be surprised. You might want to post this in the Computer/Technology Forum. Maybe someone has heard of this.

I think there is a new evil breed.

Check out this link to Lavasoft for more info

I use Lavasofts adaware to check for spyware etc and I just got the new plugin to deal with messenger - I'm hoping it will help.

If what Lavasoft is referring to is your problem, then it is an easy fix. I have posted in this thread solution for the messenger problem http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122207, but this problem isn't new. It's been around ever since MS launched Win200, but they never decided to fix it.

If that's not your problem, please post more info, like when do they appear specifically and how do they look. I'll try and see if I can find something that helps.

Thanks Mandy and Taino-ti.

The pop ups are a new problem for me, (and quite annoying). I have a link on my browser for "My Ebay", when I click on it and the new web window opens, a few seconds later a second window opens for Ebay's home page. This second window will appear 'behind' the web page I want to visit. It takes more time for both windows to open and load on my computer, which is why it is such a headache.

I have noticed that this happens when I go to Microsoft's hotmail site, and browse through their news. (although not every time). It has happened on several other sites and the annoying pop up is always related to the web page I am visiting. I use pop up killer software, and it has worked fine until about two weeks ago.. but it doesn't seem to work with this stuff! Ugh...

Is anyone else getting this pop up when they go to an Ebay page??

Thanks again!

Yippee! I figured out what was causing those annoying pop-ups. Somehow, someway adware software downloaded and installed on my computer. ( I did not consciously put this software on my computer). This evil nasty adware software is called "opensite". It is software that will display pop-up advertising based on key words that are in the address bar of the site you are viewing. Here is a link that describes what this is..

It was easy to uninstall. Thankfully it is off my computer. :) I hope no one else has this problem.

I Kind of figured that was the problem, you beat me to it. Anyway, you can use SpyBot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) to periodically scan your computer and eliminate Spyware/Adware in the future (and you will have more). Oh, and it's free. You'll find it very handy.

Thanks alot Chris!

I run Lavasoft's "Ad-aware" (free version) on my computer, and before I uninstalled Opensite, I ran Ad-aware. It did NOT pick it up. So, just by running that I would not have known. It took a bit more investigating. I will try the software that you have suggested.

Funny thing is, I have no idea how 'Opensite' got on my computer. I probably went to some unscrupulous website that had that code hidden on the page. Ugh, I hate that.

Anyway, thanks again. :p
