View Full Version : Looking for people

I am currently looking for some people who would be willing to show their COMPLETE (or near complete!) portfolios that they used for submission into art school for and upcoming thread/article/something to that extent.

This is in responce to some people a while back who were asking to see what kind of portfolios students were creating to get themselves into art school. However, without atleast a few people who would be willing to do this, there is no point in me even trying to put together such a thing.

All I need is a few people - Maybe 4 or 5 more - who would be willing to scan/document all the peices from their portfolio, and give me some information about each peice and the portfolio that will be able to compliment such an article. (basically an online reproduction of your actual portfolio!)

Would you be interested in helping out on this project???

I'll be able to give you more information about what is needed of you when you show and interest.

Thanx a lot

:D I'd be happy to help!!! I'm a junior at Bradley U in Illinois and i'd be glad to share my portfolio...I know how stressful the whole portfolio process can be and I would have given anything to see some examples before I had to put together my own. Just let me know!

Okay! So I've sent you out a PM with the details about what I can get you to do right now.

Are you familiar with the PM system yet? It's sorta one of those things you eventually figure out LOL but if you havent used it yet, i' can give you a little bit of a jump on it.

Scroll up to the top of this page that you're reading right now. In the top right-hand corner, underneith the site search bar, and above the log-out/quick links button you'll see a

"Welcome, kittykata.
You last visited: # Hours Ago at ######
Private Messages: Unread 1, Total #."

Click on the Private Messages text, and it'll bring you to your PM page! I beleive that the newest, unread ones you've received shoult be at the very top of the list of PM's. Click on the one I just sent you, and then from there it's basically just like sending a regular email back and forth (pretty much)

Just read the messege. Hit reply to type back, and send. (and yes, you do want a read receipt! lol That way you'll be able to tell who has and hasn't been reading you PM's - its just a handy tracking device)

And it's just that simple :D

And, ofcourse, if you've already got it all down, then this is like completely pointless anyways :D lol

So, get the messege. If you have any questions or anything pm me back, or having trouble finding the messege, just leave me a note in this thread.

oooooh, plz plz plz plz do this people!!! It would be invaluable to all of us who need to know this, when words aren't enough.... This is visual arts, anyway... ;)

Eager, waiting, on edge of seat, etc..

It would be so helpful. (forgive the rambling)

I would be very interested in seeing peoples portfolios!

Axl, I understand that you go to NSCAD, right? That's where I'd like to go in 2 years or so, once I've saved enough money...and built up the nerve (it's scary for us mature students)

Well lemme tell you that there are quite a few returning students in the college. It seams, actually, like hardly anyone has come straight out of highschool. Most of the students have gone off and did other things like travel for a few years, while others just worked. But there are quite a few who are returning to studies, with families, careers, who just want to do art. It is a real nice mix of age groups and backgrounds

I guess this isn't going to happen then? :(
That's a shame, I think it would have been really helpful seeing what other people had done. Particularly since I'm sort of on my own not being in school and not having many arty friends.

this is still someting i really want to do, along with a few other projects. It can still happen. If anyone else would be willing to show their portfolio, too, send me a pm?

in that case, i'll get onto organizing the article

Why not just ask the school you intend to go to what they are looking for, or what they would like to see included in a portfolio? I am not sure I understand why Axl needs to actually SEE portfolios to do one. Artists are supposed to be able to visualize...

I personally no longer need to see portfolios. I've already had mine over and done with ages ago. It would be one of the ones i'd include in this article

However, because of popular demand by the people in this forum (and thats how a lot of things work around here) an article of somekind showing examples of completed portfolios was wanted, and so that's what i'm trying to do :)

I'm sure most people do know what the school is looking for, I know I do. I don't think the point is that people NEED to see other peoples work to do one themselves, but it is nice to have a look at what other people are doing. Even more so for people who don't have a lot of outside input from teachers, etc. Yes, artists are supposed to be able to visualise, but that doesn't mean they should live in a vacuum. Why not look at the portfolio of others if they're willing to share them? If that's your attitude, why does anyone bother posting their work on this site at all.

I don't think I'm the one with the attitude here. All I did was ask a question.

I'd be happy to share mine, although any time i try to submit a photo on wetcanvas, it denies it...maybe my files are too big..i don't know how to fix that though. It be happy to help if someone could tell me where to send the pictures.

Ummmm....I do know what the school wants- exactly the number of pieces, general type of media, finished and unfinished work, blah blah and so on. Still that is not really an indication of standard is it? How can you get a general idea of your own works appeal until you see other peoples work?

["Yes, artists are supposed to be able to visualise, but that doesn't mean they should live in a vacuum. Why not look at the portfolio of others if they're willing to share them? If that's your attitude, why does anyone bother posting their work on this site at all."]

you said it, womble. This would really help our perspective as well as motivation :D It is very helpful when a person has little guidance or knowledge of what to expect and doesn't know anyone firsthand whose done it.

So.. thankyou Axl and everybody else for offering and being prepared to put their time in. :)

If you're implying that I have an attitude then I'm sorry you got that impression. You didn't understand so I explained it for you.

Also, like fluffy black cat, I'd like to thank Axl for putting time into something like this which seemingly benefits others more than herself. Thanks Axl, I for one greatly appreciate it. That goes for anyone else who contributes.

Katie it'd be great to have you on board with this too!!

I can help you out with the resizing of your pictures. Do you have any programs like photoshop or paint shop pro that can do things with images? If not, I knew there are a few free-ware programs out there that can help you do the job no problem, I can find some names for you later tonight

Just let me know how i can help :D

I'm glad that you guys are gung-ho about this! I think I have enough names now to actually put together a significant article-type thing for this project!

Sooo what I shall do now is send out a collective email to all the participants, so we can all get our images together, and I'll work on the template for putting it all together :)

Hopefully it will only be a few weeks and we can have this baby up and running!

My admissions consellor at the Kansas City Art Institute went through a large sampling of my work from the last twenty-five years, and told me that I needed to submit the following, along with my scholarship application:

12 - 15 of my airbrushed paintings (which can be seen on my website)

5 - 8 figure drawings from life

5 - 8 photographs
