Was at the art store Wed and the 24 Prismacolor set was on sale, so I thought I'd take the plunge. All your paintings are so inspiring. Here is my first try, the right one is on Strathmore drawing paper and the left is on Strathmore bristol, each about 6x8. Am I doing it right? I know I need to get more colors. This is fun:D!

Your first try  , come on, you've got to be kidding!!
This looks great. I obviously have no advice to offer, since I am no c/p expert, but I can say that I love these horses :) Go out and get yourself a great big box of pencils and have fun... and hurry up and post your next piece :)
One question, are you just winging it or are you reading any books and learning any techniques?

super first try, and yes you're getting it...only problem is 24 is not nearly enough pencils! heck i have doubles of all 120 plus some derwents, and am looking into some of the other brands too...hmm, wonder why they don't fit in my tupperware box anymore?
next time try it on some heavyweight hot press watercolor paper or stonehenge. I think you'll love the results.
keep up the great work and i look forward to your next piece.

Thanks Erin and Arlene! I'm just winging it, I don't know beans about color, been a pencil person for sooooo long. Those horses are kinda strange colors LOL! Color must come easy to you all--I just don't seem to get it.:(
I used the paper I had. I do remember reading about the paper you mentioned Arlene, but I've never seen Stonehenge in any of the art stores I shop.
Double 120 pencils!!! How in the world do you organize them?? So I have 96 to go huh? A local art store has the 120 Prismacolors on sale for $88--is that good?

Wow Great first try. ya don't want see mine.
I buy my pencils one at a time insted of in sets, well ok I work out most of the colors I'm going to need and the buy about a half dozen of each color. That will also depend on what Im working on and how big its going to be and how many of that color I have on hand. Hate to think how many Pencils I have on hand. Just cann't let the wife know about my pencil stash:D

Oh Shirl, you've done it now --- you've gone over the edge to COLORED PENCILS!!!!
A whole new delimma will happen now - you'll find youself mumbling " color or graphite.....color or graphite....color or graphite......................................." :D LOL!
I have to agree your first cps look very good. Use your black sparingly (like for the eyes), layer the darker colors instead, they won't seem flat to you then.
And you don't have nearly enough pencils yet!!!!:D
Looking for more!!!!!

Yes, definitely off to a great start! I got my prismas on sale for $72, for a set of 120, that was the cheapest I'd seen them just about anywhere (Except hearing about them at the store near Beau...unbelievable low price there if they are in stock!). Online I've seen them range from 80 to 100 and up for a set of the 120's...so I'd say the $88 is a good deal to me :) I'd get the set at that price :)

Did you work from a photo or do you have horses?

Used to have one, but not for the last 25 years :)! I can do faces real quick, out of my head, in about 2 minutes--lotsa experience (repetition, repetition) from photos and a little from real life. My problem is color. I just can't seem to "get it."
