Since this is only the second crack, let's see how it goes.

We have a new forum, and a New Year! What are you aspirations for this forum?
Would any of you like to share your expertise by creating an article? I'd be happy to assist anyone who is interested.
Maybe some of you would like to start a project. I have an idea for one but haven't had the time to put it together yet.

I have enjoyed all he WIP's in here and hope to see more!

Happy New Year!!!

I'm not sure if I understand the difference between a WIP and an article.

I think that a project for this forum would be nice so long as it is kept simple. For obvious reasons a project for this forum can not be done in an hour or two. My thoughts have been along the lines of a collage round robin style. The problems with this is that the artist here are varied in subject matter. Another thought would be (stealing this from Sam) would be if everyone created a postage stamp. The images could be scanned in, put in a stamp frame and assembled as a sheet. If everyone comes up with an idea or two we should be able to work something out for a project.

I'm personally working out what exactly I'm going for this year. I have 60 glass vases to etch that I will be selling. Last night I was working out some designs for them. A couple of the designs I might do as paintings and market them.

I intend on painting a lot more. Being the first of the year and also owning a small business my time is going to be somewhat limited for the next month or so. I'm going to be doing a few small things in watercolor while I work on my WIP some more. It has been tucked away for the holidays to insure it's safety.

The top of my list is to take my tree down and restore my house to it's proper dis-array. I hate seeing my tree go but it's huge and do to my lack of watering the needles are starting to fall off. Striping the tree and putting everything away takes so much time too that I certainly am not looking forward to it.

I am looking forward to having my boys back home. They have been at their fathers since Christmas day. I miss them terribly. Santa brought them both art sets. Their first paint by numbers. I'm interested to see how they do with them. The also received a playstation and color TV so the biggest question is if they do them at all now. My youngest will but my oldest may be too busy taking over the world :cat:

It's about time to get some airbrush projects going. However, airbrush isn't a choice for Primary Medium in the projects area. I would love to see an article on portraits, maybe we could talk Sam into doing one. His WIPs are great as are his portraits.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!

I hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable time bringing in the New Year!
I know that I'm looking forward to this year and all that it will bring!
As Leaflin suggests, I would also like to see some articles written for this forum. I will gladly participate! My question would be, how does one decide on what articles would best contribute usable information that will meet the needs of the forum?
I would love to participate in projects as well! At this time, I have no ideas for one.

I will be doing more WIP's, on animals as well as portraits!

I have to go and eat some "Black eye'd Peas" now! Who started that tradition!?

Take care!

Good point raised. For what it's worth, I think this forum should always be open to any who use the airbrush (period) as it has been discussed before, there are so many uses for the airbrush that it can not be limited. That being said, stick with what you personally do, and if we all do the same we should have a variety going in no time.

Soon, I hope that there will be the basic ab questions and problems occurring and they the newbies will post them. There are so many things that can and do happen to everyone in the beginning that it can be frustrating. I'm quite sure I have forgotten just how much so. Once these questions come up and are posted others will be able to benefit from the experience. Back to the point, anything that allows others to benefit from the experience that pertains to airbrushing is good.

I was browsing posts this morning and was a bit shocked when I found in a medium forum a thread asking for C & C being referred to a subject forum. I do not wish that to happen here. There is a minimum of two forums for each piece and I think people should be able to post to the forum they are most comfortable with.

YUCK!, glad I'm from the north. Of course I say the same about cooked carrots. come to think of it, I say the same about most veggies. Tis' good to be a carnavor :D

Hey Sam, you have a medical background, if I am insane to begin with will mad cow make me sane? Now that really would be sad

:(

Airbrush not being listed in the project forum is an over-site that I'm sure will be corrected as soon as we have a project to put there. So, let us all kick around some ideas.

This is strange tradition! I won't tell you what my Dad does as a New Years Day tradition!
What are some of the other NYD traditions?

Penny, sanity can be classified, judged, or defined by the many varying degrees of insanity. In your case, the level of one’s sanity could be reduced by the introduction of a madness less than that you already posses! LOL!!!

I'm not sure if I understand the difference between a WIP and an article.

A WIP is a thread in the forum which is commented on by other members. An article is found in the "Channels" of each forum and is more of a reference.

A couple of years ago I did a WIP on my "Firdemu" "Firdemu" WIP (http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32919&highlight=Firdemu), which went on for months. It ended being 12 pages long with all the comments and 5069 views. I had such great shots from the WIP that I decided to make it into an article. If you look at the top of your page you will see a "publisher" button. This is where any member can create an article, tutorial, lesson, etc... and submit it to the publisher for approval. I turned my WIP into an article for the Mixed Media forum, Firdemu Article (http://www.wetcanvas.com/Articles2/1471/265/)

The projects can go on for years. The first one I did was on lighthouses. People from all over the world submitted their artwork on lighthouses, so we ended up with an archive of sorts. Many of the projects have no time limit. You just add to it as you like. Some forums have monthly projects. If there is a lot of activity in projects, such as the Watercolour Forum, a sub-forum is set up to handle the traffic. We won't have that problem in here since we haven't started our first one yet. :D
I do have a great idea for one but I need some time to work on it, and will seek out some advice when I'm ready.

When a member creates a project it is announced in the forum it is intended for, then members join in. The announcement thread stays in the forum and people comment on the project in that thread.

:D Is everyone totally confused yet :D

I love your Firdemu! It's so cute!

I was thinking a water scene project might be fun. something with water, land, trees and some wildlife in it. You could do a mountain scene with a lake or a beach scene. Just an idea!

When doing an article is is best to start very basic. Your audience will be anywhere from beginner to advanced. A step by step approach is always good. It basically is a really good WIP. Have a look in some of the Channels to get an idea. You are not alone when doing an article. Once you have submitted it, it will be proof read then submitted back to you for your approval, along with helpful suggestions.

I'll start a thread to get a feel of what type of articles folks would like to see. Then maybe we will have volunteers to write some :)

I'm so happy. I just bought a limited edition print by Charles Frace. It's small, it's 6 x 9 from the Tennessee stamp collection. I just started collecting prints and I couldn't resist this one. My husband has no idea who Charles Frace is and why I would be so happy about this.

Charles Frace is one of the leading wildlife artists. What I bought is a print from a wildlife stamp. You can google the name and you will be able to find alot of his work on the net if you are interested.

They gave us wetcanvas back!!!!! I am finding that the site is slower than it was before. Is anyone else finding the same to be true? They also took our spell checker away :( Now everyone is going to know what a terrible speller I am :o

Well, I don't have much to say other than this new format is going to be hard to get used to! I will miss the spell checker, so everyone has to bear with me and my bad spelling! I'm "out to lunch" on the little thumbnails, not to mention that they take forever to load (and I have a DSL connection). I also miss knowing where people are from. And what happend to the awards??? I have always been slow to change. I guess I will have to get used to it!

My Dad's knee replacement went so well, he has already scheduled his second on the 26th of this month! So I will be treking back into south Texas again later this month!

OK, enough of that!

Hello everyone;

Sorry I have been out of touch for awhile. I have been working for days to get logged into WC. System Upgrades can always be a challenge at first. After playing around with my Cookie settings on my computer everythings seams to work. I hope the spell checker will come back.

I look forward to seeing the Articles, wips, and projects you all have talked about.

Did anyone make New Years resolutions? Mine: Make more time to explore AB.

Just want to show you all my dog "Sneakers" playing in the first snow fall of the new year. We currently have 2 feet of snow on the ground and it is still snowing. I hate winter!

Well it's 9:45 AM, in the sun and without the windchill it is -11 F (I think that equals -38 C) at any rate it's cold and all of my water if frozen  I'll probably be spending the day replacing all of the plumbing. It's expected to get even colder tonight and tomorrow. I'm about to skin my dog for her fur coat.

well, well, well......ya turn your back for 1 minute and POW right in the kisser! This was a shock, but a good one. Man, everybody at WC must have been busy little beavers over the holidays....I already used my Christmas present, needed the coal to stoke the fires here, bbbbrrrrr only about 3 degrees with the wind chill. I'm busy getting ready for the airbrush class I'm teaching starting this weekend, but I meant to tell Sam his WIP of the chipmonk was wonderful. And it seems frozen water or no, Penny's doing a great job of keeping things rolling here too. No, I didn't fall off the earth, but the holidays sometimes feel like that here. Got in a bind finishing murals and stuff before January, and I lose track of time. I think this upgrade will be spiffy once we learn it. I've been meaning to post a pic of the kid's bedroom anyway, this is as good a time as ever. Welcome to the new year everyone :cat: Tigerquill

Just wanted to say hello and thank you. I just found this forum last night and have already found the answers to most of the questions I have had about airbrushing. I have painted in acrylics but switched to oils because I wasn't getting the desired results, I always found that the acrylic was drying too fast and I wasn't getting that clean and crisp look I wanted to attain.
I have been awed by some other acrylic artists and have been wondering, how do they do it? Then last night the light went on and I realized they are using airbrushes. I did a bit of searching on the internet and then realized there was a new forum here at WC.......So, I think I am going to try one out and just wanted to thank you all for your contributions here......it really helps to hear from those who have already gone thru the growing pains of trying a new technique, how to get started, what to buy, etc.......   Thanks again!

Maggie,
Not all of those wonderfully detailed paintings in watercolor and acrylic are airbrushed. I've stuck my foot in my foot in my mouth more than once assuming they were. I don't know how they do it with a brush either. It truly amazes me. Airbrush is one way to do it and the only way I know how. I also prefer to airbrush. Sometimes it’s faster than a brush, sometimes slower, some people incorporate both. For me an airbrush is more versatile and once you get comfortable with it, it becomes an extension of your hand. I have found that using paintbrushes is more cumbersome. The second you set a brush down it has to be cleaned, the most brushes you can use at one time is two without having to worry about the paint drying and ruining the brush. I can set down the airbrush for a few minutes without cleaning it. I don’t have the bowls of water around to spill and change and get everything wet. I can go from fine line to broad stroke without changing a thing. In the beginning its more mechanical while you learn to use the tool. It can be more tedious if you constantly mask everything off. For me airbrushing is a pure joy, I love it and will never change.

Thanks for posting.

Penny

Colorfast,
thanks for the cudos and yes the girls I did this for are thrilled with their new room. They couldn't wait to move back in and I guess they drag everybody who comes in the front door right into their room to show them. I had the girls paint on shell and seahose stamps and stamp the walls one afternoon, then incorporated them into the mural. I think there is no better time in life to encourage them to play at art because they become adults who don't fear it. I'm just sorry I can't use a higher res to show 'em. I have a few more murals coming up. I'll try to get better WIP pics for the next time, but usually I have crasy deadlines. I did this room in 9 days. How goofy is that??? I've almost never been on this forum without seeing lurkers in here too. IMO this is one of the friendliest, easy going forums on WC. I'm with Colorfast, jump in anytime. The forum will never get out of it's infancy stage unless everyone joins in.

Power went out last night, not sure what time, two alarms in the house, neither went off, everyone slept in, I woke up when my hubby called for the fifth time, he was getting worried when no one answered the phone. Thank God the buses were late, we woke up 2 min. before they should have gotten on the bus.

Coffee in hand, compressor is charged, I'm going to go paint. I've hit serious frustration on my wip and I need to just work through it so that's what I'm going to do today. If it goes good, I'll be smilin', if I ruin it, my woodstove is always hungry and I will just have to start over and change what didn't work. I have a friend who gives me the kick in the butt and picks me up by my boot strings when I need it, so I owe it to him to get over it and go on.

Great day everyone.

I to have found it a bit frustrating to deal with the changes on WC. However, sometimes we all have to experience growing pains in order to expand. I look forward to joining in on the community projects and seeing more of the great work by our members.

This year has started out on a very sour note for me, beginning with Christmas. I am struggling with my own inability to deal with all the changes happening in my life and with my family. Being able to stop thinking about it and read and look at the work here does help to give the mind a break.

On a good note I may be able to work with a local gift shop doing some production work for her and in exchange I would be able to put in some of my artwork (if I had any). I have been trying to come up with sketches to do a presentation for her and have hit a brick wall. Talk about frustrating! Some of these designs I can see clearly in my head and they just flat refuse to transfer to my hand. I have suffered some disapointments with my art, which has caused me to doubt my ability. I have hit a complete block as to how I wish to proceed with my art over the next year; so I am just not a happy camper.

An illness in the family, discovered on Christmas day and proceeded to major surgery has made all of my upset about my life seem almost selfish. I feel almost guilty worrying about trying to make money and my painting when someone I care deeply about is fighting for their very life.

So before another day goes by, I want to say thank you to each and every person and artist here. Sharing time from your busy schedules with the members here on WC sometimes has a profound effect which far exceeds the simple appearance one may see on the surface.

Thank you,

Cherri

It's not you, it's a bug that is going around. If you are right handed, put the pencil in your left hand and draw. Do not be critical of how it looks, you are not expected to have a refined drawing style with your left hand and you can fix it with your right when you are done. It's like there is a direct connection between the visual and the left hand. I'm not sure what a left handed person has to do. But this works for me. It keeps the thinking part of the brain out of it.

An illness in the family, discovered on Christmas day and proceeded to major surgery has made all of my upset about my life seem almost selfish. I feel almost guilty worrying about trying to make money and my painting when someone I care deeply about is fighting for their very life.Cherri

Do not feel guilty, it is only our closest personal friends and family that want us to succeed and it is in their honor that we try. That is the legacy that they give us. I had a friend who was terminal and on kemo, I painted a brilliant painting that he could hang on the wall, step into the painting and escape. I honestly don't know who the painting meant more to, him or me. It's how I dealt with his pain and it gave me great comfort to do so. Inspiration comes from many places.

Congradulations on your new venture with the gift shop. Does she have production work in mind for you or is it open? If it's open, start a thread and we can all see what we can come up for you. As far as getting paintings done to show her, don't bother, as you have them done bring them in and let her approve of them then. Production pieces can get your foot in the door and create income, art takes time and should not be rushed.

Penny thank you for your post..

I will try the left handed drawing.. although that IS a scary thought. LOL

As I read your post, tears came to my eyes.. Seems like they have been doing that a lot lately. I am not a whimpy cry baby, so this tends to tick me off.. lack of control.. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Well, I have only talked with her over the phone I am trying to get a few things together to take to her and discuss the whole thing. As far as I know at this point (Everything is up in the air of course) she wants me to do some production T's or other textiles for her and she has given me the subject matter that she feels would sell best in her shop. I strongly expressed to her that I would NOT infringe on any exsisting copyrights, which she whole-heartedly agreed to. Hence the sketches and test paintings. I have to admit to everyone that doing some of the production work does NOT appleal to me, however, as you said it may be a way to get my foot in the door. She did state that I could put some of my art work in her shop.
I have a bit of a problem with the self-confidence issue, so getting something I am happy with and getting the first meeting over with is going to be the biggest hurdle for me.

So many issues, so little time. LOL

Penny220 & Maggie were writing about how Acrylics in Hand Brush is sometimes created with the Airbrush. They can be confusing when you see the detail created by the airbrush.
Everyone thinks by now that I only work with the airbrush to produce my artwork. Then again, sometimes people think my art was produced digitally. Not!
Well, here is a project I created as a demo for my students at the university. I always asked them to create a piece of art in one medium and make it look like it was created in another. So when you go!!! Try to leave them guessing.
Now, can anyone tell me in (What Medium) was it created in, i.e. Water Color, Acrylics, Oil, Photoshop, Pencil, Finger Paints or was it Crayons?
Then, can you give me the technique utilized to create it, i.e. Paint Brush, Pencil, Digital, Airbrush or was it photography?

Now, don?t you all post at once? It might be just a trick.

so, what are you creating Linda? If nothing else, sign your name with the airbrush so you can post it with us when you are done ;)

Your post set off bells and whistles, for those who have not looked, check out the site announcements. WC will be down for a time on Friday.

After days of interuptions and frustration  I gave up on my wip for now and started a fresh. Why? cuz I can :D Because staring at something that isn't working only frustrates you even more, figured it was time to get the brush back in my hand. :)

I'm working on an acrylic of Wilson Creek at Douthat State Park. We camped there last fall and I got some great shots. I'm going to use the airbrush in parts of it so I'll be able to post it in here :)

This just in...
...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CONTINUES A WIND CHILL WARNING
THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING...

STIFF WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH OVERNIGHT WILL COMBINE WITH FRIGID
TEMPERATURES TO CREATE DANGEROUSLY LOW WIND CHILLS. 25 TO 35 BELOW ZERO ACROSS CENTRAL NEW YORK. AT TIMES...WIND
CHILL VALUES COULD DIP AS LOW AS 40 BELOW ZERO...ESPECIALLY ON
HILLTOPS AND OPEN AREAS. THESE HARSH CONDITIONS WILL LAST THROUGH
THE FRIDAY MORNING COMMUTE TO WORK AND SCHOOL.

Unfortunately, I tend to fall 5 to 10 degrees less than the lowest number posted, meaning, the wind chill factor for my house will be aroun 45-50 below. Yup, it's true, the saddest part is that running water freezes at these temperatures. I just got done baking muffins, turned around and well, every pipe in the house was frozen. I got all but my shower working again, why, I'm not sure, I will have to thaw it all again come morning. :( . Last Saturday buisnesses downtown had frozen water, so at least it's not just me :)

Todays high in the full sun was 1 degree, I thought it was a heatwave!!! If I ever see 32 again I might keel over due to heat-stroke. lol

Well the month is coming to an end.. Thought I would give everyone a shout.

I have been hanging around and not posting much, did not have much to say. Finally, I do. Well, that may be good and then again, maybe not.

I have been in a sorry slump for weeks now. Finally, I see a teeny light at the end of the tunnel.

I had a meeting with a shop/boutique owner this week. We had talked on the phone a week or so prior and she had given me an idea of the type of things she was looking for in textiles. She asked me about bring my portfolio.. I said, sure would love to, as soon as I make one up. She laughed, but I was serious. LOL I don't have many of the things I have painted around. Well, I printed out some of the photos of the paintings on my antique printer and then drew up some fast sketches. I then put them on pellon and then did a few T's as samples. I threw in some of my tile work and a few of the other items that I do and off I went. Talk about butterflies in my tummy, mine where elephants. ( I don't market me very well).

Well, the good and the bad news is she wanted everything wholesale; the good news is that she liked almost everything I showed her. We talked a bit and finally settled on the deal. In addition to the order she placed with me she also is going to allow me to put some of my custom work in the shop. This makes the wholesale part a little easier to deal with, that and one of my friends said wholesale is better than no sale !

I now have to come up with some designs. So if anyone would like to donate tropical themes with parrots, please feel free.

So that is where I am at now.. So maybe before Feb. my world will get back on track..

Oh, best news of all, my brother in law took his first steps the other day since the surgery. Hopefully this will continue and his recovery will be swift.

I'm glad to hear about your brother in law Cherri!

I'm on my mom's computer way down in south Texas! My Dad had his left total knee yesterday and is doing great! Now that he is out of knees to replace, he will be on the track to recovery! The winds here in Texas have caused a great deal of damage! On my way down Sunday,(6 hour drive) my car was struck by a large section of a wooden shed that blew off of it's foundation! I'm a little upset about the damage but maybe it can be repaired!
Seem's as though I have missed some interesting events going on here! I need to get caught up on the scoop! I should be home by the end of the week!

Take care!

Sam

Great news about your Dad Sam. Take good care of him so you can hurry home and paint some more for us. I loved your last bird. Bad news about your car, hope it wasn't damaged too bad.

Cherri that is great about the boutique. I sell my clay whistles in local shops and by time they take their "cut" I wonder if it is worth it
Great news about your brother-in-law!!!!!

Wow Sam I'm glad you're OK! Looks like your Dad is an ideal patient :)

I think I have had just about enough of winter.
Our little camper is sitting out in the driveway just waiting for spring and another adventure.
The snow is so hard with all the ice on it that 'Nick' can walk on water!!!
