I hope you all have your large canvas's ready!

So, let's give some ideas of what we can paint.

Bugs, (butterflies, even close up of a little bit of a wing might make an astonishing painting!)

Flowers - close up

The pattern that a small section of leaves and branches make against the sky

What else is little?

This sounds great!

I think I will try a close up of a flower.

I see this as a nice challenge!

A lady is comeing today to talk kitties with me, I will be doing a coloured pencil kitty 45cm by 55cm black paper.

oooohhhhh, TeAnne! That is going to be a stunner! I wish you weren't so far away, as I would love to bid when it comes up. Unfortunately, I think shipping could be quite costly. What's the size, support, and media for this one?

Hi Jolie, thank you :) It's oil and is 17 x 17 ( 45 x45 cm) Postage isn't that bad really, I'm going to take one the same size to the PO and get the exact cost. Unframed, it should cost a lot less than the framed one I sent off @ $48.50 + $7.00 insurance. lol

Large as in how large? Watercolours don't really sell for me above 14x10 (framing costs put people off). I'm doing another poppy macro in that size now - poppies are about 2 inches across - think that qualifies? :)

Te, that rose will be very dramatic!

Maybe we should have a "wahol" month sometime :)

Ruth, try this. Where you see one colour, substitute it with another. Doesn't need to have any relation to the original colour or any other colour in the painting.

eg. You see blue, paint red. Then when you see red, paint yellow, you see purple, paint orange, black areas could be painted pink.

Makes for a very interesting composition (but try it on a small test painting first to see if you like the idea!)

Each month we pick a topic that we paint very losely around.

This month is "small things big".

Then we put the resulting pictures on eBay for sale.

You can put 4WC in the title of your ebay auction, and if you do then you have to put a line within the description like

"Look for more "small things painted big" in January by searcing for 4WC" or something like that.

If you don't want to put the 4WC in your title you don't have to.

The most beautiful photographs of flowers are found in the Image Library!
Congrats to all of the fine photographers here!

However, as much as I adore the photographs, I can't find one that I want to do a macro of, or paint, right now.

I will probably do a macro of a nude for this project, although I would prefer to do a macro of something else!

Yes. One of my biggest sales on ebay was a frog. The painting was only 8" x 10" but it went for $128. We watched two people fight out the last couple of minutes in shock - there was a frog painting very similar in my store for only $50. LOL

After the auction the "loser" went and bought the one in my store, and also bidded on another one I had up at the same time. They were for her father's birthday, she told me.

Then I went into a "cow" phase. They didn't sell as well as the frogs.

I also have a large painting of two frogs here (well, at a neighbours, I have to get them back) that I'll be putting on my frog site as well.

Maybe - would anyone be interested in doing paintings to put on the site as well? You would need to have paypal set up so that you can put buttons on, but I don't see any reason we can't have a group frog page if anyone is interested?

The URL would be suitable

I guess we wouldn't have to have everything paypal. We would just have to be very certain of the payment options and postage options for each painting.

Once I have enough paintings I'll set it up, and if anyone wants to join in they would be welcome.

But it would mean that you would have to keep any paintings you do for that page off ebay - or alert me if you change, or sell, so that I can keep the page up to date!

There are a LOT of frog enthusiasts out there, and lots of frog links.

Hi Te,
The rose looks gorgeous.

IMHO:
I think you should mention in your description, in a different colored font, what the reserve price is.

Also, I don't think it is helpful to the painting you are selling, to show the photograph that you painted from.
(This is interesting for us artists, but not for buyers, imho.)

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks Nina :) The reserve price is right down the bottom. I know you all do it but why does the buyer have to know the reserve price?

I put the photo in because a few people have bought this as a print, so some might recognose it, and it shows that I didn't do an exact copy or composition.

Hi Te,
I have been informed by seasoned ebayers that it is important to put the reserve price in the auction description.

I didn't find your reserve price listed.
Perhaps it should be displayed more prominently.

One of the reasons given to me about why it is good to indicate the reserve price, is to make buyers feel more confident about bidding. Perhaps if bidders know that the reserve price is within their price range, they would be more likely to bid.

:D

~ puts on her strict, no nonsence face ~

Now now children.

The reasoning behind putting in the reserve and the reason that experienced buyers would want to know it, is that they want to know that they aren't wasting their time bidding.

Often they will go straight to the reserve price, I've had that happen.

People can also be discouraged from bidding if they get the message "you are the highest bidder HOWEVER you have not yet reached the reserve" etc.

The theory behind not showing your reserve is to encourage bidders to bid higher. I don't find that works for me on ebay. I don't find that reservers work for me on ebay at all. But they might work for others.

We don't seem as excited about this months game. I know I got side tracked by frog-art.com!

But there is still a lot of this month to go.

I have a bid on my dragonfly! Maybe I'll do a big frog and put up for auction, then I can tell all the bidders about frog-art after the auction is over or something. Frogs are small :)

It's so beautiful TeAnne.

I've never really glazed anything, and certainly not in oils. What do you make your glaze out of?

TeAnne

Thanks E :)
Transparent Paint, oil and #1. Medium
or
Transparent Paint & Liquin.
or for a slow dry (I don't like this one) Wax medium and Trans/paint.

Don't worry, I'm trying to learn this technique and it ain't easy lol
Slow old process too. :( But it's worth it to see the effects.

Both of those pictures are lovely!

Notice how the sunflowers are "exciting" with the movement, while the poppy is almost "peaceful" in comparison?

The oddest thing, is it just my monitor or have two different people doing two different flowers used almost the same pallete?

Thanks Diane & Eliza! Eliza, I'm seeing different palettes. Lets see, I'm using Phtalo Blue, Quinacridone Magenta, Lemon Ochre, Yellow Ochre, Cad Yellow & Mixed White. Oh yeah, and it's painted over a black ground, so I guess black as well.

All the flowers are beautiful, as are the other macros in this thread. Ruth, I can't believe only one of your dandelions sold, I'm sure the others will too if you relist them.

Struggling for time (as usual), but managed to get my pic done for this month's game. Took a little longer than I would have liked, and it will look a little odd listed alongside my nudes, but so what - I enjoyed it! I'll be surprised if it sells though, but you never can tell with ebay.

Pastel and charcoal on paper, 13.5"x9", not huge, but I had to bear in mind framing costs.

Drat it Nina, now that I've got a little spare money your beautiful painting of a bottom has gone. But there is a puddy cat.... :)

You should do a siamese - they are popular and have they wonderful startling blue eyes.

They also have different coloured points, and people who have, for example, a lilac point might be interested in buying a picture of one. They come in seal point (black/brown) Chocolate point (light brown) Lilac (blue grey) red (orange/red) tabby point (errr, tabby, whatever that is) etc. Do a web search to find all the different colours.

Hi Eliza,
Thanks for the info on Siamese cats.
I've always been allergic to cats so I have never really examined them up close!
lol
I have a gorgeous new book on cats and a coworker gave me a cat calendar with giant close ups of cats, so I have some good references for cats. But I will search further for pics of Siamese cats. Thanks for the idea!

Currently, I am fascinated by calla lilies, trees and nudes.

Here's mine, better late than never, and it's on ebay with no high hopes. I know it's not VERY big, but I'm trying - AND I've just treated myself to a x 10 optical zoom digital camera, which I am desperately trying to get to grips with in time for the Spring goodies.
