I have only used soft pastels and enjoy them. The down side is they can be messy and hard to frame.

How do oil pastels campare? Do you use them the same, blend them, are they dusty. What is a good brand to buy? Educate me please.

everything you EVER could want to know about oil pastels!
And quick answers...yes, they're messy! You can apply Holbeins straight like regular pastels the best, Senneliers and Caran d'Ache are two other good brands. None are dusty...they're like holding butter lol! Yes, they can be blended, applied with turps or with color shapers...

They are messy in terms of getting your hands dirty, but otherwise less messy than softies because they aren't dusty and are not so easily disturbed. They are used similarly but not exactly the same as softies; e.g. putting lights over darks is more difficult.
