I know nothing much about art history, just what I pick up, but I've been interested in some of the Impressionists, as of late. Venus in Sunlight is one of my fave paintings, I even did a copy of it, so imagine my surprise, when I recently stumbled on this Ritman, done a few years after the Frieseke, but looking like it's sister. Anyone know anything about this anomaly?

i'm with you Greg - know nothing - but wow!! - i love this first one - yet the second does nothing for me.... so i reckon, imo,
Frieseke beats Rtiman.!!

After searching a little online, I found the answer to your mystery - Louis Ritman was a student of Frederick Frieseke. They were both involved with the Art Institute of Chicago and influenced by Monet and Whistler. Frieske was part of a group of American Impressionists known as the Giverny Group who showed in New York.
For a nice write-up on Frieske:

You can find links to many other works by Frieseke.

Two that I really like are: Woman with a Basket of Flowers

The Birdcage

Cincinnati has some pieces by Ritman that I like better than the one you are showing.
For a nice site on Louis Ritman:

Check www. artcyclopedia. com for links about both artists.
Thanks for letting me know about these two artists.

Frederick Frieseke is one of my inspirations...I have a print (Lady in a Garden) (http://cgfa.sunsite.dk/frieseke/p-frieseke15.htm) in the studio and would love to know more.
Thanks, bjs!!

Wow, Impressionism usually doesnt do a ton for me, but I was stunned when I saw that first painting you posted! Too bad this was done such a long time ago...Id love to ask him how he got that gorgeous luminosity in her skin.
