View Full Version : Game for January 04!

Seems to me that the "hot red" is doing pretty good considering the lack of buyers at the moment.

But I think it deserves a better market, so I'm putting it on the poll again in case anyone wants to continue with that theme in Janurary.

I'm going to put some other things as well that I think might be fun to try. I don't want you to ignore them right off. Maybe you might want to try them as an exercise, and then see how you feel about putting them up on ebay.

Nina - I have you in mind particularly with one of them! I want to see how your style would look doing some cats!

Remember - that's what this is all about. We have different styles and we shouldn't change that. Just how do our different styles and mediums look when we all follow a subject?

I haven't made up my mind yet, Eliza, about a choice for January.

Animal crackers in soup?
Hmmm.
Sounds interesting, Eliza.
;)

I made an attempt at a cat a couple of months ago and here she is. I didn't know that what looks like her tongue sticking out is supposed to be a small chin.
Live and learn.
lol

Maybe I subconciously remembered that cat Nina. What I had in mind though was a cat sitting with it's back towards us - the same as your nudes! I can get some reference photos for you if you like.

I would definitely need some ref shots cause I am clueless about cat anatomy.
lol

But I don't see "cats" as a choice.

I vote for red again, but then most of my work has lots of red in it anyway. I definately agree that it deserves the benefit of a more active market. LOL I was tempted to vote for painting macros, but I already did that a few months ago and listed it on eBay twice recently. Unfortunately, it's still sitting in my studio. I was really surprised that it didn't sell, as it's a large, very colorful piece.

The painting was a very abstracted version of an already abstract macro photography piece from the reference library. I actually had it up for auction twice...the first time starting at 1GBP with a reserve and the second time at 49.99. I think the highest bid I got on the first auction was either 22 or 27...can't quite remember. It wasn't anywhere near my reserve, which was 49.99.

I decided I wouldn't bother relisting it again for now and would wait until the eBay UK shops are up and running in mid December. I'll put it in there at retail price. Do you think I would be better off just putting it back up for auction, perhaps in January? Now I'm suddenly feeling wishy-washy about it, but I felt pretty good about the decision until just this moment. LOL

I really don't know. Things are so slow this month, and it should be our busiest time.

I'm not listing much for the rest of the month, I'll keep one auction at a time going, not at FP, to lead people to my store, but other then that I'm building up stock for next year :)

NO! it shouldn't be our busiest. I've been selling my art since 96 and I can tell you that Dec is NEVER a good month for 2d art. selling season for those of us doing shows runs mid march-end of oct...

some sales in November early, but then it drops like a hot potato. Sept-Oct should have been our busiest months.

Long way to go yet, and I'm reserving the right as creator of the game to wait until the end to vote so I can act as tie breaker if needed :)

Alternatively, we can always just do both!

OK, I broke the current tie -- I'm so ready to do something bright and red. I have yet to actually get in on one of these 'games'. I have good intentions...but mostly I have blank canvases that I promised myself I would paint and sell so they wouldn't have to be part of next year's inventory for taxes. Well, I'm too late for that but maybe if I get an early start with the January game I can have them all painted by end of NEXT year! Then again, I may turn back to digital imaging and let the canvases rot :D

People with digital cameras should be looking and thinking about now what references they can take.

I'd suggest that we take photos and there will be some we want to keep for ourselves, and some that we will be happy to share with everyone.

Then everyone will have sources to paint macros from.

TeAnne, maybe you and I should go to botanical gardens and parks over the next couple of weeks and get some flower photos for our snowed in friends?

And our snowed in friends will just have to think harder what macros they can take for us :)

Other suggestions would be things like pears or other small fruit - they aren't very big - painted on really big canvas's

Or insects, or oohhhhhhhhh I just had an idea for February. Remember "negative spaces" for me :)

A bit of both :D I had to make room for the laptop that hubby said I could use for photos. Plus, I try not to let it get too messy, cos if I have to clean it up before I start, I won't start. lol I hate working in a mess. eg: vinni fur, dust bunnies, and the normal painting mess.

do what rita does...start em at $39 each...that's US.

I would wait until after the NY - say Jan 3 or 4 - and then I'd FP the pink one at $39. I'd list the other at the same price but not FP. Then I'd make a "room" that shows both side by side with a link to the other auction (singular), as well as the usual link to your other auctions (total)

In other words something like "to see the matching pair to this painting click here" and put that on both paintings.

Somehow I don't think brown cats will sell.

Do you think it would be ok to take some artistic licence? I wanted to put her photo in the listings as well, so that wouldn't work.

I guess I could add lots of red and yellow highlights, with blue shadows.

Nina, it's okay if you don't care for bugs. :) Although I'd just love to see how you could stylize dragonfly wings ;)

This was the reference I used for mine, forgot to credit it.

Stock photos all have various levels of usage. Most are free for any use, others need permissions. There is some great stock in there. Took me four days to look through over 3000 flowers, and some nice birds, bugs, and trees. Might check it out. I intend to email the owner of any photo I'd like to ref regardless if they offered it free, just as a courtesy.

Te, I like your hydrangeas and rose.

Cute dragonfly, Eliza. :) I've become enamoured by them myself.
I also have a ladybug sketched out and ready to paint.

notice the huge feet.

We say "it's a puma!" "it's not a puma" (shades of Kindergarden cop)

So the final vote is macro?
I'm hoping to paint TODAY to get my year off to a good start of breaking out of my old routines. I want this year to be about new experiences, new friends and a new outlook on life.

Yes, the final vote appears to be for macros.
