View Full Version : Happiness is.....

This was my entry for the one emotion painting project. We had a lovely holiday of the Greek Island of Kos in June 2000. EVERY night we were treated to some wonderful sunsets, which I don't do justice to in this painting. At the time I hadn't started painting, but was 'longing' to.
Watercolour 9" x 12", rough arches paper.
Thanks for looking, and as always your advise and comments are welcome (and needed)

Hi Karen... Sunsets and sunrises can be a challenge, but well worth it. Since you hadn't started painting but have now..I am sure you could critique some of this yourself quite well eh? If you decide to try this one again..maybe the following would help.
Straighten out the horizon line..
Either shorten or lengthen the mans shirt so it doesn't line up with the floor edge.
Don't try to paint the flowers in over the
color already in the water..results in "mud".
Let the colors of that sunset reflect in the water.
Hope I am not being tooo critical here, but I know from your postings that you are eager to push forward with your watercolors. I do think you have conveyed the "feeling or emotion" we all can relate to regarding sunsets like this .. http://www.wetcanvas.com/ubb/smile.gif Keep painting, you are off to a great start!

Carol - No, I don't think you are being too critical, I need everyones honest opinions to help me move forward.
You'e right about critiqing myself, there are many parts of it that I knew afterwards were wrong.
A lot of my probems are down to technical skills and knowledge that I haven't yet acquired.
I'm on holiday for 1 week now, and will have some time for painting. I am hoping to do your watercolour lesson of the lake, which I think, will help me understand how to build up layers of watercolour, which I didn't really do here.
Thanks for your comments.

no problem KaTee... when you get around to the lake painting - let me know if I can help by posting here or by email. I am sure others here are equally eager to help to.

I would like to say that I like the composition aspect of the picture. You have conveyed the unity and peacefulness you felt as a family at that moment.

Thanks, I'm glad that I managed to convey the emotion I felt, so the painting was a partial success.
I think I may do this painting again in a few months time (when my technical skills are a bit better)
