This contains so many of the things I am interested in right now. I love the pallet, so limited and yet singing. It is a language all to itself and in that language on of the things I like the most is the yellow ocher (?) under the bottom lip. I also respond well to the background and the lip color reflecting each other. Is it Paynes grey in the beard or maybe something else? I would be interested to know. And of course the thing I have difficulty painting is hair and you have made a success of it. The suit contains so many little "drawing" elements there can be nothing but respect for it and that is where we find your signature so you get some of that respect for yourself. Looks like an old movie down there, reminds me of things I like. The only little thing I am off about is the ear on the left side. Seems a little like you were simply making a bow and while it is not the focal point I thought a mark or two more might help it join the rest of the painting...
Your fan,
Simon

Great portrait! Love the crop and the texture of the skin. Is Freud an influence?

Thanks all.

Simon, I haven't used Payne's grey for a long time. It's probably some mix of cad.orange,Ultramarine and white. Thanks for all your kind words.
You're right about the ear.

I really like this. I feel like I know him now, as if I could stop him on the street if I saw him--very nice!
The ears were mentioned, so I won't be redundant ;)
