The one with the trees at the top of the hill is painted from life, the other is made up

I like the second one best. However I feel it may have been better if the crossing of the hills were less centered.

How do you say "brusque" in English ? That's what I feel about the transition of values in both the paintings. It sort of cuts them in two ... Just MVHO.

Thanks all. I see what you mean Gilberte, The shift is made sharper by the photo process, but is present in the paintings to a lesser degree. I have noticed that I have developed a tendency to extend horizontal bands of color across my paintings lately, I can't really tell why that has occurred. Maybe I need to paint figures for a time, change my focus.
