I have been taking photos all year in anticipation of painting this winter in studio. Many photos I would like to try in various styles....palettes, etc.. It has occurred to me that it might make more sense for me to register the copyright for the photos rather than for each of the 2, or 3, or 4, of the individual paintings that might come from each photo. I'm curious to hear thoughts on this question.

Hmmm... now I think (and this is just pondering, don't know for sure) that the resulting paintings would also have to be registered to protect them. They are artistic works in their own right. If you want to register that is, it isn't necessary. But if you read older threads here and the government website in the Sticky thread at the top you'll see that it can be recommended.

You don't have to register the paintings individually, they can be registered all at the same time for just $30.00.
I do it that way, usually register the copyright once a year. Our art is still protected buy copyright before we register it, the registration is just added protection in case you need to prove the copyright in court.
