this was done in my pastel class that I take every tuesday. It is of my grandaughter and was done in a couple of hours..
MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
I have a lot of trouble with colors and knowing what colors to put next to one another. Hope you can help me

if this piece is any indication, you seem to know what you are doing. the color on this looks just fine. love the rendering of the over-alls
you might want to post a photo of your granddaughter if you want comments on likeness

just do more
sensitive line and color
to focus on composition you can complete your works to the edges, and plan ahead to use the full space available

Without knowing what she looks like....it still seems that you did a bang-up job on this. Colors are lovely!:)

thanks for your imputs, I needed that, I love painting my grandchildred and animals. I am a nurse and Tuesdays at class is the only day I have to paint.

Frankly, I like the "unfinished" look, specially with portraits. The vibrancy of the colors in this is amazing. What brand of pastels are you using?
The only thing that bothers me in this is the lower lip. It seems too bright.

Seems you're doing a great job at what you find the hardest.
The remedy for your trouble is of course experimenting and trying and a good way of doing that is to have a same paper as the one you're working on next to your work to try out your colour combos and compare.
