View Full Version : Failure after success

I should have known that after doing the hummingbird, which I felt was a success, I would come up with some thing like this. LOL! It is one of my fears, doing something good and then losing the mojo. Oh, well...

I have a table with birdseed on it on my back porch and I have this piece of firewood standing in the middle of it. I trained my camera on the wood and caught Mr. Nuthatch.

I burnished and burnished with colors and with colorless blender and it didn't seem to do anything on the wood and very little on the bird. I used gamsol on the background and then colored over it and burnished with colorless blender. I couldn't get the blending that I wanted. I don't know that I have the patience for colored pencils. LOL!

This is much better than you think. There is a lovely golden light in this picture and I like all the angles in the piece of wood and the nuthatch. I like the texture of the wood and the background. :)

Great going, Ginny! I know what you mean about not having success every time - just keep on practicing! If the cp are oil based, you could always go over to mixed media - add op's or oils with solvent to blend into the cp:angel:

I'd love to have a failure like this!

I agree, it is much better than you realise.

What you see as failure others see it as a delight... the texture you just don't like may be super attractive to someone else... anyway, there is no failure if you got some more experience...:)

I agree with everyone, Ginny. This is a wonderful colored pencil piece. Nuthatches are such charming little birds, and I think you've captured their clever look so well in this. It's wonderful!

Ginny, that is all part of the artistic journey. You may be a little disappointed with this work, but it is really good and sticking with it despite your reservations was well worth it. Hats off to you.

Thanks, Jenna and Chammi. I am a very impatient person. It takes a long time to do a colored pencil piece. LOL! We'll see if I can hang in there...
