I am a beginner with pastels but thought I’d try a painting of Indy.
It’s on Pastelmat paper using mostly “Schmincke” pastels, around 8” x 6”. I thought I’d post it in the pastel forum, too.
I think this is one of my favorite works by you, and that says a lot! The softness of the fur, coloring, expression, shading are all outstanding. You are using the pastels like an expert.
May I ask, do you do value studies first? (As I really dislike doing those.) How long did this take to complete?

Thank you very much, Joy. I am pleased you like it.
No, I don’t do any studies. I just plunge straight in. It didn’t take long - two hours, maybe.

Penny, you have done so well with those pastels. Excellent portrait of the adorable Indy.

Thank you for your encouraging comments, Chammi. I appreciate your interest.
I am used to being precise with coloured pencils and pastels take some getting used to, being a matter of blocking in colours and pushing them around! Very mucky, too, with pigment dust everywhere!

It is just like Indy. You have caught his sad and wistful look to a t.

Thanks, Lesley. The painting itself is whiter than in the photo, which has come out with a yellow tinge.

Penny, you've done a great job with Indy! Pastels are a challenge for me - I never did get the knack. You're well on your way, by the looks of things!

Thank you, Jenna. They are certainly a challenge for me! I thought about throwing it away part way through. It was was a messy process, too. 🙂
