What brought you to art school? What did you get out of it?
For those of you currently not enrolled, but wish to go, why do you want to go to an art school? Like... I dunno, what do you expect to get out of it?
I'm trying to figure out why I want to go...

i'm in school because i'm an artist (as romantic as that sounds)
and believe me, i got letters everyday from schools trying to recruit me into their engineering and architecture programs. i had the test scores, and the GPA. it really irritates me when i have to take classes with other art students who are art students "because they couldn't think of something else to do". those are the ones who will never pick up a paint brush after graduation. why waste your time? (this is really another thread)
and how has it benefited me?
simply, i didn't even know what art WAS until i studied it in art school. i was still under the impression that art was just being able to copy a photograph well. boy have i come far...

I was born an artist. I think, eat, dream, breathe art. It is the way I process life. All of this isn't necessary to be an artist of course but art school certainly isn't. I've had a calling since I can remember but going to art school was just a formality to enhance what was natural to me. If you don't even know why you want to go to art school maybe you are more enticed by the idea of it than the reality.
Definitely explore for awhile before declaring your major or selecting an exclusive or narrowly focused school. As broad as the art field is people often don't find there niche until they are well into a different area and it is too late for them to switch. At least you have the opportunity to realize it early.
