WetCanvas! Announces Completion Of Global Village Art Project
Five Continents, Twenty Artists, One Masterpiece
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ATLANTA/EWORLDWIRE/Nov 16, 2003 --- After traveling nearly 40,000 miles across 5 continents, and passing through 20 pairs of creative hands, a 22 by 30 inch original watercolor painting is poised to help raise money to build a much-needed elementary school and library in the rural Chinese village of An Shang.
This collaborative painting, Global Village, is the brainchild of Mary-Ann Archibald, a watercolor artist living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Archibald, along with 19 other world-wide artists, met online through wetcanvas.com, one of the Internet's largest community sites for visual artists. The group set out to create this unique work of art, using the Internet as a staging ground for their project.
"Through the wetcanvas.com community, I discovered thousands of other artists, from all walks of life, and from every corner of the globe. That is how our group met and decided to do this painting," says Archibald, who placed the final brushstrokes on the painting on November 11th.
Starting in Buenos Aires, Argentina in June, the original sketch and first section of the painting began with Alex Sahores, an architect and watercolor enthusiast. "I am loving wetcanvas.com. It is my window to the art world and this project concentrates all of the site's philosophies for me. Being the first one to sketch and paint a section was a great honor for me. I chose the dock, because it represents the Argentine people and the door to the world. Because of the importance of the dock, people from Buenos Aires are known as 'porteños' which means 'harbor people.'"
The painting then criss-crossed the United States where eight artists from seven states contributed to the painting. From the United States, the painting traveled nearly 5,000 miles to Herefordshire, England, where Ruth Harris added a traditional English church to the colorful cityscape.
Retired Surveyor and artist, Doug Elliot, in Lancashire, UK was next on the list: "After taking up watercolors in earnest since retirement, I have been encouraged and inspired by fellow artists on wetcanvas.com to improve my technique and take on an ever wider range of subjects. The Global Village project is an excellent example of worldwide friendship and cooperation, and I am delighted to be part of it."
After completing subsequent trips to Belgium, Singapore, and New Zealand, the painting finished its journey around the world in Canada, where five different artists there placed their creative spirit onto the paper.
"The goal of the wetcanvas.com community has always been to leverage technology to promote the sharing of information and resources among visual artists", says Scott Burkett, the founder and President of wetcanvas.com. "To see this theory in action with this particular project has been truly special for all of us."
The finished painting reflects its "global" nature by including elements from each artist's own locale, including a Belgian castle, the desert skies of Arizona, and even the legendary SS Edmund Fitzgerald sitting in the harbor.
The finished painting is currently in Sheridan, Wyoming, where a series of limited edition giclée prints and commemorative posters are being prepared, through the assistance and support of Artist Printshop, a leader in fine arts reproductions, and a partner for the wetcanvas.com Global Village project. Proceeds from the sale of the prints will be provided to Global Volunteers, a private non-profit, non-sectarian organization which is helping construct a much-needed school and library in An Shang, a village outside Xi'an in Shaanxi Province of China.
The original painting will be auctioned on e-Bay, with the proceeds going to support the growing wetcanvas.com community.
Artists participating in this project are: Alex Sahores (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Barbara Cannon (Orlando, Florida), Lyn Cherry (Maryville, Tennessee), Bethany Duke (Galveston, Texas), Emilie Everett (Taylor, Texas), Sylvia Duggan (Oakwood, Ohio), Al Risinger (Tempe, Arizona), Beverly Fagan Gilbertson (Warsaw, Indiana), Judy Buckingham (Portland, Oregon), Ruth Harris (Herefordshire, England), Doug Elliot (Ormskirk, England), Kate McNally (Verviers, Belgium), Marvin Chew (Sarawak, Malaysia, now based in Singapore), Ng KweeKing (Singapore), Rod Webb (Christchurch, New Zealand), Andrea Levasseur (Squamish, BC Canada), Emily Lagore (Edmonton, AB Canada), Charlene McGill (Chatham ON Canada), Ursula Rodriquez (Guelph, ON Canada) and Mary-Ann Archibald (Halifax, NS Canada).
