View Full Version : MAY "Feathers, Fur, Fins & Scales Challenge"
05-01-2019, 06:31 PM
Hullo Animal & Wildlife Members - I haven't been able to contact the Member who was scheduled to Host this May Challenge, so I'm Hosting instead.
2 of the photos are my beloved animals and the rest are from the RIL - many thanks to the members who have loaded their images into the RIL.
Please do not post your entries until 20th of May 2019. It's much more fun if we all post about the same date - gives us all something to look forward too and much more exciting.
You can use any of the images, can crop them or put 2 together, or paint/draw them anyway you would like too, using any painting/drawing medium. You can also chat about the Challenge with other members and ask any questions about them - but please do not post your entries until "Reveal Day" which is Monday 20th May 2019
So here we go;
This is my Jack Russell/Fox Terrier - "Pippa" who has just turned 4 years old and many of you will have heard me talking about Pippa. A little mischief but has quietened down considerable now she's older! That's her pink toy dolly beside her - the only toy that's lasted more than a few days without being totally destroyed!
This is my beloved Miniature Horse "Star Dreamer" who passed away at 24 years of age, last year. He was my precious, special boy and I'll miss him always. "I know you are having a great time with your horsey friends up there at the Rainbows End, Star Dreamer."
The next photos are by Lisilk and are from the RIL
Red Panda by mbeckett
Koi Fish by Rosa Weitzel
Frog by C.P.
Jelly fish by WithrLady
For all the Cat People - a Burman by Masperius
And for all our Aussie friends a Cookaburra by Pazza
I hope you enjoy the selection and find something you would like to make art with! Looking forward to seeing your results on the 20th May.
Great refs, Viv. I am going on vacation in a few weeks so I might do one of these later.
05-01-2019, 09:50 PM
Joy - Glad you like the pics.
If you are going to be away at posting time, and if you've completed an entry beforehand, if you Private Message me your entry, I can post it for you on the 20th.

05-02-2019, 07:21 AM
Yes, thank you, Viv. Lots of good subjects to choose from.
05-02-2019, 02:09 PM
There are some good photos so it will be difficult to chose which one to do.
05-02-2019, 04:04 PM
Nice selection, Viv! I see a character or two that I'd like to do. Nice to have a little more time during our summer, when all the tourists have gone back north.
05-02-2019, 04:37 PM
Kay, joy, Lesley, Penny and Pat - Glad you like the pics. Looking forward to seeing what you all come up with!
05-02-2019, 04:38 PM

05-02-2019, 05:54 PM

Yes, Viv. I decided quite quickly. 😁
05-03-2019, 09:23 AM
Excellent selection Viv... Hope I can join this month since I've been in a commission work and has taken me forever to finish. Not finished yet, but soon...
05-03-2019, 11:21 PM
Yay Pippa!! Yay animals!!
Viv, thank you for your kind offer. That is nice to know and I may take you up on that if feasible. But I am still working on my eggs from Watermedia April and I have so much going on at home.
05-05-2019, 06:25 AM
I am new to the forum and have been invited to take part! I have only done one animal painting so this will be a challenge. I will try the fish or the frog: but if its too bad I may not post it:lol:
05-05-2019, 02:06 PM
Bizzibee - the Challenges are here to challenge ourselves and just enjoy! We have artists at all levels of experience entering the challenges. So no matter how your paintings turn out please do still post on the 20th. Ive done many paintings over the years which Ive binned but with each one we learn something new. Have fun. .
05-05-2019, 03:59 PM
Yes, Bizzibee, please do take part and have fun. There is always something of worth in any work - even if it's that it makes you happy working on it. We are not critics, just people enjoying taking part.
05-05-2019, 07:49 PM
Bizzibee: I have no doubts that you whichever you decide to do, you will do it beautifully - you underestimate yourself. It's good to break out of landscape every now and again - I can't wait to see what you come up with :)
05-06-2019, 08:19 AM
Viv and Penny thank you very much for your encouraging words. I really do appreciate your taking the time to write them. I fully intend to do that frog and post it!
CaliAnn thank you: your words are a constant encouragement to me (and no doubt to many other WC members), and you must not underestimate how important that is! I agree that it is good to have a change. I was going to say it will be a break from mixing greens, but then I remembered I am doing the frog!😃
05-08-2019, 06:44 AM
Great refs. Viv.
Bizzibee, enjoy yourself. The challenges are not for criticism but simply to encourage all of us to have fun and produce something each month. Please post your frog and be proud that you have finished it.
Bizzibee, I would really enjoy seeing your frog painting. That seems like a difficult subject. We are all learning all of the time, so please post! I know I really appreciate the encouragement and suggestions at WC! Oh, and what is your name, if your care to divulge a first name.
05-08-2019, 03:43 PM
Would also like to know your name. We are a friendly bunch on first name terms here.:)
05-09-2019, 04:42 PM
I've taken my name off the Hosting List for August, as I'm Hosting this month. Would anyone like to Host August 2019?
05-10-2019, 01:38 AM
Woo-hoo! I finished one tonight, so at least I will have one piece for sure to post! Its just a small one, but its DONE.
05-16-2019, 11:48 PM
I've just finished my May Challenge painting. If I get time a may do another, but only a few days left now until Reveal Day - the 20th.
05-17-2019, 12:51 AM
That’s good, Viv.
05-17-2019, 12:10 PM
Thanks for the reminder Viv! Got to get busy.
05-17-2019, 06:36 PM
I know how you feel Kay! This month is hurtling away from me too! And I've yet to begin my Watermedia challenge, but hope to get on to it today.
05-19-2019, 05:04 PM
Hullo Animal & Wildlife Members - here in New Zealand it is Monday 20th May, so here's my Challenge Entry.
20cm x 30cm - PanPastels on Mi-Teintes paper
This is my beloved Miniature Horse "Star Dreamer" who passed away last year at 24 years of age. I'm pleased with the way the painting turned out, as I showed it to my husband and he said "That's looks exactly like him", and it does. I decided to focus on his head and left his body and cover very loose so as not to distract from the main focus.
Looking forward to see more entries.
05-19-2019, 05:23 PM
That’s lovely, Viv. A beautiful reminder of him.
I’ve chosen him, too - I expect there will be more - and I hope you like it.
Polychromos coloured pencils on a watercolour paper.
05-19-2019, 06:40 PM
Vivien, very sensitive drawing of your beloved horse, beautiful.
Schuee - some lovely textures in your horse.
I decided to have a go at the frog.
05-19-2019, 09:12 PM
Awwwww, Penny, that looks so much like my boy! You know he had the tiniest, furriest ears of any Mini Ive ever seen and i used to love to put my head and face on them and give him a cuddle. Id had him since he was a 7 month old foal! it pulls at my heart to see him! Thats him in his furry winter coat. i miss him so much!
05-19-2019, 09:14 PM
Shane - lovely little frog! like the way youve painted him against the foliage!
05-19-2019, 09:26 PM
Very nice horses, ladies- he really was a cutie!
Toowoomba, love your frog - he's very colorful!
I also did the little frog. I thought he'd be perfect on a small chunkie canvas with an acrylic pour for the background. He has quite a bit of gold on him, made taking a photo a bit difficult. 4x4x2
05-19-2019, 09:29 PM
Pat - hes a cutie and I really like the background too! i must learn how to do those acryic pours.
05-19-2019, 11:54 PM
Vivien and Penny - love your versions of Star Dreamer!
Shane and Pat - great frogs! The backgrounds are cool
I decided to try the kookkaburra in softies, 7x10
05-20-2019, 01:35 AM
Shane - your frog is great. I love the background, too.
Pat - another excellent frog, sitting there in the wet.
A cheeky little kookaburra, Christel. Well done!
Thanks, Viv. I’m pleased you like him.
It’s hard enough loosing a dog after 10 or so years, so what it must be like loosing a pony that has such a longer life span! I do understand how you miss him - the loss of my dogs tears at my heart every day. Such precious creatures to share our lives. My friend will be in the same position. Her Irish Cob is over 30 years old and she's had him since a youngster.
05-20-2019, 03:09 AM
Viv Such a lovely sensitive tribute to beautiful little Star Dreamer. I really feel your loss but oh such wonderful memories to hold onto.
Penny. Seems you have captured the little horse in his winter coat perfectly.
Shane. I love the style in which you have painted the frog. Super.
Penny. Delightful little canvas work. Like the bg. a lot.
Christel. Very nice little kookaburra. Super work with those softies.
05-20-2019, 03:12 AM
Here is mine. Just a quick sketch in my sketch book. I really enjoyed doing this one. I did some research on the Kookaburra and just fell in love with this little bird.
05-20-2019, 03:22 AM
Wow I feel like I am late to the party already! Vivien what a lovely image: it must have been emotionally difficult for you to do that, but it is a great success. Even better that Penny has also produced such a super work for you to cherish. Great job Penny!
Shane that is a wonderful frog! The colours are amazing - what medium do you use?
I love your frog too, Pat. That chunky canvas suits him perfectly! I bet the gold looks super IRL! Excellent!
Christel he's so cute! The fence is excellent also!
I am super impressed with all your lovely work! I am going to try and upload my frog: my internet is off typically so will have to do it via mobile. Hope it works!
05-20-2019, 03:24 AM
Oh my Chammi, your post overlapped with mine! Just seen yours now! I love it, especially how you have only partially coloured it. I think that really works!
05-20-2019, 03:27 AM
Well here it is, my second animal painting! I think I bit off more than I could chew and it was indeed, for me, anyway, a difficult one! 8 x 8 oils c and welcomed and appreciated! Trudi
Oops! Just noticed he's a bit dark. It is not like that IRL!
05-20-2019, 06:11 AM
Thank, Chammi. What a dear little Kookaburra. I like the lightness of the sketch and that blue.
Bizzibee - an excellent frog. I often find I have to edit the lightness or darkness of a photo before I post it. I can do this on my iPhone.

in graphite and the other and ink with tinted graphite.
Viv and penny love your horses, both are so well done and a good colour match to the original photo.
Pat , Toowoomba and Buzzibee- love the colours in the frogs.
Changi and Christabel . Gorgeous Kookaburras.
05-20-2019, 09:36 AM
Lovely expression in his eyes, Lesley. I particularly like the sepia coloured version.
05-20-2019, 10:58 AM
Kookaburra with him facing other direction. Watercolor, gouache, and ink on splatter paper.
05-20-2019, 11:30 AM
I'll post mine now and return to comment.
5x8" ink and dry inktense
05-20-2019, 12:30 PM
Lovely colours, Kay. A lovely bird.
What fun, EP, in your distinctive way.
05-20-2019, 01:39 PM
Viv - awww there's your dear sweet miniature horse :) How lovely, your husband's comment :)
Penny - well done. Good solidity to that horse skull. I find their facial feature proportions challenging since I've never spent time around horses.
Shane - oh what a lovely colourful frog!! Love it!!
Pat - ahh so good - froggie looks ready to leap right out of the painting :)
Christel - awww so delicate :)
Chammi - what a plump little guy with a serious expression :)
Buzzbee - so atmospheric - good shine/dampness on parts of the frog body :)
Lesley - awww what a fun pair of sketches of Star Dreamer :)
Kay - love the bg behind the bird
Penny - thank you :) I'm fond of my otter sketch :)
05-20-2019, 04:34 PM
Thanks, EP. The llama/alpaca is a scream, too!
05-20-2019, 06:12 PM
Thanks for the comments.
Pat - The gold in the frog really shines, excellent work, I used copper in mine.
Christel - Beautiful painting of the kookaburra.
Chammi - A lovely drawing of the kookaburra, great penwork. I see these wonderful birds almost every day, there are a lot of them in the local bushland. They call out at sunrise and sunset which sounds like a laugh. The song is so true "merry merry king of the bush is he".
Bizzibee - Such a soft and velvety texture to this painting, really good. Mine is painted with acrylic inks.
Lesley - You've captured the character and beauty of this horse, lovely.
Kay - Fantastic watercolour, you've caught the happy nature of the kookaburra well.
EP - Aww, they are beautiful and friendly looking animals.
05-20-2019, 11:47 PM
Chammi - lovely sketch! I was surprised when I found out that the bird is part of the kingfisher family.
Bizzibee - gorgeous!
Lesley - both are cool sketches!
Kay - lovely version of the bird!
EP - cool sketches! Love that duck.
Thanks for the comments on my bird.
05-21-2019, 01:16 AM
I've seen wonderful "star dreamer" paintings, gorgeous frogs and fantastic kookkaburras, and nice design too, I've choosen the fish:
9/6 ,I wanted to paint also the jelly fish but time was missing.
05-21-2019, 03:05 AM
Zelda - love the colors of your fish. I used to have a fishpond years ago
05-21-2019, 03:15 AM
Thanks for all the nice comments. I will comment individually later. My computer is on the blink and has gone for repairs. I am writing this on my phone.......so frustrating.Wonderful work everyone. Thanks so much for hosting Viv xx
05-21-2019, 08:16 AM
A real fishy character. Very nice, Zelda. The dark blue water is a favourite colour.
05-23-2019, 02:22 AM
Bizzibee Your frog is beautiful. I like the way he seems to melt into his environment.
Lesley Nice, lively sketches of little Star Dreamer
Kay Super watercolour. Like that background a lot.
EP Delightful sketches of the animals. Great idea putting them into little frames.
Zelda The dark blue background really works well against the bright colours of the fish. Well done.
05-23-2019, 04:04 AM
Penny thank you for your kind comment about my frog. I always struggle with photos but I think this one was especially difficult because it is fairly
Lesley I like your horse sketches, especially the tinted one. Don't think I will be trying a horse anytime soon - too difficult.
Kay I love that Kookaburra and the background is wonderful!
eyepaint I like what you have done with the images: it creates a quaint collage effect which is very effective. Thank you for your comment about my frog: I am pleased you detect wetness on the its body.
Shane and Christel I appreciate your kind comments very much.
Zelda, lovely colour combination in that fish and background.
Chammi, thank you for your lovely comment. Hope he does not melt too much and disappear, given how dark the photo shows!
Thank you to all for your encouragement. Hope I haven't missed anyone! I would like to join next month, time permitting! Trudi
05-25-2019, 08:03 PM
Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I love three-day weekends. Relaxed on the couch last night with watercolor pencils and a waterbrush, and enjoyed creating art while at the same time watching a movie with hubby. (Well, only halfway watching, lol! :wink2: )
I think my frog looks a little sad...maybe he wanted to watch the movie, too.
05-26-2019, 02:30 AM
He’s a sweetie, monarch.
05-26-2019, 12:59 PM
Thank you, Penny!
Viv, thank you for hosting and having such great references. It was hard to choose among so many fun ones. I love your mini horse pastel and hearing stories about him.
Penny, your horse looks so gentle and it makes me want to hug him.
Shane, such lovely bold and bright work on your frog!
Pat, your acrylic pour makes the background really interesting. I can see some of the gold shine in the photo, I can imagine it's even more beautiful in real life.
Christel, great kookaburra and I love the colors you chose.
Chammi, another great kookaburra, he looks like he's keeping a sharp eye on everything. I really admire the loose and sketchy technique.
Trudi, your frog turned out so cute, all tucked cosily in the leaf for a nap.
Lesley, both versions of your horse turned out really nice!
Kay, I especially like the creative way you did the background and the branch the kookaburra is standing on.
Eyepaint, the expressions in the portraits of your animals are all so sweet, especially the otter.
Zelda, the bright colors you used in your fish make this piece really eye-catching.
05-26-2019, 03:08 PM
05-26-2019, 03:32 PM
Thanks a lot Monarch. The kookaburra was fun to sketch.
Your frog is delightful. So tiny and cute!
05-28-2019, 10:04 PM
Chammi - Lovely pen & ink of the Kookaburra!
Thanks for your comments about Star Dreamer. Yes, I have 24 years of marvelous memories of the wee man! He was such a character...never a dull moment with Star Dreamer! He would always do the unexpected. One of the most memorable was when he was a young horse and I was Showing him. He'd won the Championship and when the Judge went to present him with his winning rosette and ribbon... quick as a flash....he grabbed the flower from her jacket into his mouth and ate it!!!! I was mortified, and the whole watching public broke out laughing at him. The Judge was astonished, then burst out laughing! I loved him very much....he was special and if I close my eyes I can remember all the cuddles with his furry little head and ears against my face...until he got fed up with me cuddling him and then he would give me a bump with his head. A very special little horse indeed.
Bizzibee - Beautiful oil painting of the frog! Well done! I hope you'll join us next month too.
Lesley - Both are lovely sketches of Star Dreamer!
I see you are Hosting our June Challenge, Lesley. Looking forward to seeing your photos.
KreativeK - Beautiful watercolor of the Kookaburra! I like the background too.
Ep - Great sketches done in your own wonderful style and I see Pippa and Star Dreamer there too!
Zelda - Beautiful painting of the fish. I'm glad someone painted the fish - he was beginning to be a bit lonely! The dark background really makes the fish stand out!
Monarch - Well done on a great painting of the frog - I couldn't have managed nearly as well while watching tv as well! He's looks terrific!
Thank you so much everyone on all your wonderful entries! I'll post the Gallery tomorrow.
05-29-2019, 05:00 AM
Lovely frog Monarch - so many good versions this month!
Thank you Vivien for your kind comment! Looking forward to see the gallery.
05-29-2019, 01:07 PM
Vivien, thank you for the great images…. I have found every one of them appealing, but I chose the Burman cat. Sorry I’m so late.
I’ll post the others I’ve done….three of them have sold.
Vivien – such soft pastels for your ‘Star Dreamer’ miniature horse.
Penny your version is wonderful also.
Shane – I LOVE your frog. Such bright colors – outstanding!
Pat – your frog is perfect on that canvas. Nice bright colors also.
Christel – sweet little kookaburra bird.
Chammi – very impressive ‘quick sketch’!!
Bizbee – I love you frog also. Sometimes indoor photos will appear too dark.
Leslie –great sketches of the horse.
Kay – nice job with the kookaburra bird. I like the background.
Eyepaint – nice job with all of them!
Zelda – I like your koi.
Monarch – great job with the popular frog also.

05-30-2019, 06:01 AM
Mary - sweet version of Star Dreamer.
05-30-2019, 06:06 AM

Cute horse Mary!
05-30-2019, 04:24 PM
Bunny, what a busy girl you have been!!! They are all lovely. I would not be able to choose a favourite. Well done,
I like the textures in your gentle portrait of Star Dreamer Mary.

Here's your May Gallery. Many thanks to all those members who entered my May Challenge and for all your wonderful paintings!
05-31-2019, 02:28 PM
All the works are phenomenal! That's a very nice gallery, Viv, thanks!
05-31-2019, 04:46 PM
Terrific gallery Viv. You make such a good job of these every month. Thank you so much. The May challenge has produced some great works. Well done everyone.
05-31-2019, 05:54 PM
Excellent, Viv. It is good to see them all together.
05-31-2019, 06:30 PM
Many Thanks for your lovely comments on the Gallery Chammi and Penny!
Penny - It wasn't until I was making the Gallery, that I noticed I painted my little horse "Star Dreamer" as he was when he was much younger, many years ago! It came out that way so although I painted him from the same photo as was posted - I must have been seeing him that way in my mind! Your version was as he was as an old horse and was exactly correct.....mine must have been how I was seeing him in my mind....years ago. How strange!
My mind and hand got together and I painted him as he was years ago!
06-01-2019, 09:15 AM
Thank you to all, especially Vivien - a great challenge!
06-01-2019, 09:49 AM
How interesting, Viv. All your memories of him as a youngster came through into your portrait. He’s lovely in both his youth and his age.
