Interesting colors in this one. There must be a story behind it. Maybe poetry will come soon and produce a story. Could the guy on the left be a clown? and the boy his assistant?
I like the way the whole image is infused with that magenta-y pink. Like at sunset.

From the title it must be about immigration. Great colors and composition!

the dark before the dawn
have to run, will write some thoughts later today on this first day for the rest of their lives
all that background indicates they are leaving the past behind
the foreground figures are so far forward they are just about to step out of the old into the new
end of night
dawn is always the most hopeful time of day

The rounded stones underfoot feel so strange
The beach back home was hot and smooth sand
at least what was once home
how could this have happened?
Forever my people lived and loved there
we fished, we farmed, we loved
traders came from afar, and anear
we laughed together
Perhaps it was greed, jealousy, lust.
The men began coming who wanted more than trade
Our religion was called backwards and evil
Under the guise of reform, they took our happiness.
The evils they committed in the name of their God
it was not in the name of a true religion
It was evil men being evil men
But when we had nothing left for them to steal,
The killing began
first they killed off the most devout
for the devout would not fight
then they ruined the women to satisfy their lust
then they stole the babies to raise as servants and slaves
Any men still standing were taken in boats to be sold as slaves, too.
In the badlands, in the land of the killing logs,
many escaped, only to die in the swamps
my friend and I found and old dry log canoe
we floated and paddled many days to freedom
we came to this strange shore, to this strange land
whatever awaits us must be better than our home
the sun will rise and we will find a way
we are truly refugees
in a new land, help us
Looks like he is wrapped in the Amercan flag. A strange land of hope, or is it horror.
You did it again.

Thought provoking. The figure on the left looks world weary, the one on the right, more hopeful. I too see that figure as a boy wrapped in the American flag and find myself hoping too........
