View Full Version : Bailey the Beagle (Commission)

Hi there.

I'm happy to finally share this now that it's safely in the hands of my clients. I was given the honor to draw this sweetheart in scratchboard. Bailey was born in 1971 and passed away in 1983, so this was done in his memory.

The scratchboard is 8x10 inches, drawn with a #11 X-Acto blade. Color is done with Ampersand inks, which was fun. The colors are warmer and richer in person, without the slight pinkish tone in these images. Sadly, while I was working on this piece over winter, my own beagle, Simon, passed away at almost 13 years old. This was a poignant and meaningful commission in more ways than one.

I am happy to say that my clients love the portrait. That's what it's all about.:)

C&C welcome. Thanks for looking!

A couple of close-ups.

Jenna, I know just how you feel losing your own pet. It is such a wrench in one's life. What an incredibly lovely work you have done as a tribute to Bailey. I am not surprised that the owner was delighted with it. It must have brought about a few tears of remembrance.

Jenna - This is absolutely fabulous! Super Scratch-board work!
I'm very sorry to hear you've lost your own dog. The pain of losing a beloved dog is intense and I know just how you must be feeling. I like to think we haven't really lost them as we will carry them with us in our hearts forever.
Big hugs from Viv and our Group :grouphug:

Thanks so much, Doodlepad!

Thank you for the kind comments, Kay! I really appreciate them. :)

Skipstah, thank you so much. Scratchboard is really interesting and exciting to work with. I never tried it in school, but I've seen the kits. This is an addicting medium. :)

Chammi, thank you so much! It was so hard to lose Simon. He was very active and healthy (and happy and howling, as beagles will do :) ) aside from having lost his hearing. He had a slipped disc that suddenly made him unable to walk. I'm sorry that you, too, have dealt with the loss of pets. They are part of the family, aren't they?

Penny, thank you so much for all the kind words. In a way, drawing some else's beagle made it a little easier to deal with the loss of ours. Art is so comforting that way.

Thank you very much for your kind words, Viv! I'm pleased you like the scratchboard. And thank you for the nice words about Simon. That means a lot. :grouphug:

Federico, thank you. You're very kind. :)

Sorry for the loss of your own dog as that is so heart wrenching. Still miss my girl after almost two years now.

Lovely dog and so well done. I really must try scratch board someday. I once did a Bailey beagle in colored pencil. They are such neat dogs.
