the forum says have not posted in many weeks, so am posting this - is still in the doodling pencil stage, but the composition is gelling in my mind, and soon will begin sketching sections to solidify my mental image... what is it? is a large imagined Asian landscape showing a waterfall at the fore end of a lake, almost at eye level there, with far distant view of the back end of the lake... on each side of the falls, there are homes with extended gardens that cantilever down the sides of the sloping rock, sort of like the rice paddies on hills, then project out into the space, connected to each other, a series of Japanese style gardens that circle around the falls, connected at the foreground right the other side of the chasm, with an extension to the fore left, showing an apartment and balcony ledge, on which resides a resting figure that is overlooking the gardens... and am figuring will probably be a 40"x60" sized work... in a way, this is a further exploring of composing along the lines of "Moon and Tea", tho the composing is all in my mind and has been slowly coming into focus so can begin the sketches - in other words, the mental view is there, but the dickens has been in the details... so stay tuned, more will be coming...

Sounds beautiful, Robert. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

first impressions -
these will be altered and in better perspective, but give the idea - the gardens themselves yet to be detailed for the most part, but will be presented after the 'floating' sections are formalized...

Makes me think of Frank Lloyd Wright somehow.
Looking forward to progress updates.

is not inked sketched, but here are the floaters more or less arranged around the falls -
03-07-2019, 05:17 PM
now ink sketched and needs be thinned - but shows the floaters around the falls from end to end...
03-08-2019, 11:52 AM
as noted, there are too many floaters - they making a clutter, not a set of gardens... at least a third need be removed... so - am doing a series of sketches of proposed gardens, and see how that goes in cutting down the number... here are a few -

Good start! This looks like it will be one of those you stand in front of for hours and constantly discover new things.

a few more - http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/08-Mar-2019/44482-The_Hanging_Gardens_006_001a.jpg
03-09-2019, 03:54 PM
and a vertical one, to go on the side of the fore right -
03-11-2019, 09:05 PM
well, it took awhile to figure out how to go do this, but now think can have a go at it, finally - The Hanging Gardens, in progress -

03-13-2019, 06:34 PM
just the background left to do, and maybe fill in a few more of the empty gardens... and that is pebbles in the foreground of the left garden, with a shallow pond in the middle.....
03-16-2019, 03:38 PM
03-18-2019, 11:06 AM
not look like that much, but is fine point, and is a start...
03-19-2019, 12:37 PM
slowly moving along...
03-28-2019, 12:23 PM
as can be seen, there has been some revisions - less number of gardens...http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/28-Mar-2019/44482-The_Hanging_Gardens_0015a.jpg
and on the left will be a figure standing on a balcony overlooking the lot...
there will also be another garden covering the lower right space, probably another zen garden - the open garden slot will have a vertical garden, three actually, all lined up but only one will be seen to the viewer, as they needs face to the falls for the sprays, and it will be similar to this -
once get these last gardens penciled in, can begin inking them, and think the whole grisaille of this painting will be done, and coloring can at long last commence...
04-02-2019, 01:49 AM
and the inking has resumed..............
04-03-2019, 01:45 AM
and a bit further - this is the whole of the area...
there will be a zen garden in the blank one on lower right, and a stone/waterfall/pond 2-tiered one on the open space lower right, and under the figure will try to squeeze in part of a vertical garden..... oh yes, the figure will be standing on a short window balcony over the vertical garden...
04-04-2019, 11:30 PM
detailing takes time, but there is progress...
04-05-2019, 06:41 PM
04-07-2019, 06:47 PM
slowly but steadily am getting there - and yes, every blade of grass it seems...
04-08-2019, 06:30 PM
04-11-2019, 11:41 AM
working on the Zen garden.........
04-12-2019, 03:27 PM
turns out 'raking' the sand is much harder on my hands than doing the grass... but another couple of rounds ought to get this finished...
04-13-2019, 05:58 PM
the shadows still need be put in, but otherwise the grisaille of this garden is done...
04-15-2019, 03:37 PM
working on the rock/falls/pool garden -
04-17-2019, 09:03 AM
04-17-2019, 05:31 PM
and this garden is grisaille finished - the pond, like the others, will be filled in when coloring the whole painting...

One of the things I must emphasize about this work, "The Hanging Gardens", is that while the theme and general view of the idea was in my mind, the 'dickens is in the details' holds very true - one can see the like in the various sketches presented versus the final inking of specific gardens, as well in revising the numbers to be included... in that respect, it has been, like the "Moon and Tea" before it, an act of composing as I went along, particularly with regards the kind of each garden and where placed - all are from my head, tho inspired by several real gardens from around many places, by no means even most being in Japan, tho several were noticed in my researchings... I say this because there is noticed a series of breaks, or so it seems, between various updates, which seem more than just resting my hand - sometimes composing goes like those who work in music, some being 'all there' in the mind and needs only to get down to paper, while others involve much sweat and yes, tears of frustration, before a solution comes to mind... perhaps is a sign of getting older, or perhaps is recognizing that these newer works are more complex than ones done years ago... in a way, this is because am striving now to present ideas lain dormant for near half a century for various reasons and only now ascended to the fore of my mind to do, and as such needs more time to bring into creation...
So do not presume have lost interest in continuing with the work, be it this one or future ones, only that am plodding along in MY world at the speed am comfortable with, even as am eager as you are to see it ended and in grand flourishing...
04-18-2019, 06:33 PM
on to the next garden...
04-20-2019, 06:05 PM
note that on some of the rocks, I have gone over the lit edge with white ink to remove the 'cartoonish' look... when the ground is in all the way, the rest will be done as likewise...
04-21-2019, 03:09 PM
04-22-2019, 01:50 PM
and the rock garden is grisaille finished -
and now, on to the mini-forest garden...
04-26-2019, 12:52 PM
in case wondering, have taken a short break to copy an old work of mine which may go for a sale, Soul Etude... when done with this, will be back on The Hanging Gardens...
not the best light, but you get the idea... and the right side of the copy is under the original, so there is plenty room to get the rest of that part of the bar...
04-27-2019, 06:50 PM
and having essentially finished the other, just needing to darken the water reflections, am back on this, The Hanging Gardens, the mini-forest garden now in progress -
05-04-2019, 10:46 PM
still need to finish the ground work on the mini-forest garden -
and am working on the Teahouse garden, after several needed revisions, as can be seen...
05-05-2019, 06:58 PM
finished the mini-forest garden, now to finish the Teahouse garden...
05-09-2019, 11:24 AM
FINALLY, after far too many interruptions, am back to this.....
05-09-2019, 06:48 PM
05-09-2019, 10:26 PM
What patience you have, Robert.
05-10-2019, 01:47 AM
it has been trying because been interrupted for one thing after another, but now hope to complete the grisaille in a week, than can begin glazing color over all of it...
btw, the painting copy I did of Soul Etude - sold...
05-11-2019, 04:41 PM
05-12-2019, 05:28 AM
Wow! Robert I really admire your patience. Its amazing.
05-12-2019, 09:29 PM
and the teahouse garden grisaille is finished - now for the last one, the vertical garden...
05-13-2019, 08:44 AM
I probably ought to show the whole of what has been inked, so to get better idea, even tho parts are not yet penciled or inked...
05-15-2019, 08:21 PM
and the vertical garden is penciled in -
05-17-2019, 08:24 PM
beginning inking -
