View Full Version : Small bubbles in oil painting - any way to remove?

Before I add another layer of paint to this oil painting, I need to figure out if it is possible to remove these small bubbles or blisters. It's the only area of this painting where I have seen this issue. This area has two to three fairly thin layers and I'm pretty sure I waited long enough between layers for it to dry.
Thanks for any help - somewhat new to oil painting.

Unless the area is still wet, I am afraid you will have to use a painting knife to scrape the bubbles, after that, repaint the area with the same color.
Now, if the area is wet, you could try flattening the paint with an artist's spatula.

Any idea how they were formed? Was the painting placed near a heat source? For a bubble to form there has to be some expanded air / gas trapped between the dried surface and the ground or paint layer(s) below.

Thank you both. I have no idea how they were formed, but will try just scraping them off. I appreciate your advice!
