My theme this month is New Zealand! I saw some superb paintings of New Zealand and just had to investigate further.
You are welcome to use your own references of New Zealand too.

Wow Christel, those are just gorgeous! I want to participate this month! October was particularly crazy because I did every single day of Inktober in addition to my job and my many knitting orders! But now things have calmed a bit and I need to pick up my OPs again :)

Awesome pictures and your works, Christel! :)
I especially liked the one with the boat.

I have to wait until I get better with oil pastels so that I can take part in such challenges too :)

Welcome to the Oil Pastel forum (and to Wet Canvas in general), Mira88!

I hope you don't wait to join in until you think you're "better" with the OP's. I've been at this about a year and a half, and I still consider myself a beginner. I think the best way to learn is to just post your work, at whatever level you're at, and ask for feedback. Lots of helpful folks here! I've learned a ton.

Not to mention if I'd waited until I was at Christel's level, I'd still not have posted. But that's why it's nice to share your work here because you can get lots of helpful tips and tricks. The internet doesn't have a lot of info on OP's, so please consider this your personal resource.

Thank you, tuscanny! :)

I will try next month and see how it goes. Actually the idea of such challenges is very exciting, I love such things ^__^
By the way, I have a few ideas on challenges, can I share them with you? :)

Hi Terri! :)

Thanks very much for the support! Actually I do plan on posting my own work here however lame it may look like compared to awesome works of the pros :D I was just saying painting Australian theme would be very difficult for me I guess. For the moment I am practicing in painting clouds and sunsets, hehe. But I will try to be creative and come up with easier adaptations of the upcoming challenges ;)

Oh, absolutely agree, the internet totally ditches oil pastels! :o
I am so happy there is this forum here, it has so much to offer. You can't imagine how little about this wonderful medium can be found on the Russian internet! Things like "OPs don't mix" and "they are just for sketches and student practice", "you better combine OP with other mediums to get nice results" etc. I doubted OPs were a good idea until I found this forum and realized my cheap OPs can't do much (well, it also depends on the artistic skills in general, but still). Two weeks ago I got a 48 pcs Mungyo Artists' Soft OPs set and I'm very happy with it. OPs can blend well after all! :D

One might be good for January as many go travelling abroad during Christmas and New Year holidays (well, I am not sure about Christmas in the US, it must be only two days as far as I know; not too sure about Europe but my impression is that they also travel abroad around New Year time).
So I thought about posting some Old Europe cities - you know, like Prague old town, maybe Stockholm, Tallin... (haha, I only mentioned the ones I've been to). My husband and me went to these cities during New Year holidays, Prague was actually our 6-day honeymoon and we LOVED it! Despite the beginning of January, there still was Christmas atmosphere.
I have some of my own pics and can find some good ones on the internet, too, to show what kind of atmosphere I mean.

Another idea was a tough one. Trying to paint your favorite fairy tale/ fantasy character. There can be anything starting from brave children from books from kids (can't come up with any good and popular example now) up to some tough guy (or girl) from the Avengers. Or maybe a dark character from Stephen King like Roland from The Dark Tower. I am not too sure if this theme will spark interest in the fellows oil pastelist. But just a suggestion :)

Great ideas, Mira! How about hosting a challenge? January maybe?:cat:

I don't mind :) But what does a host need to do except for creating a good and clear challenge and checking back every now and then? :)

You can also upload your photo references into the ril at a higher resolution - look at the ril for inspiration too.

Great ideas for paintings, Mira! Beautiful architecture is always interesting, and lots of artists get inspired by fantasy art/characters from books.

Hope you have fun traveling during the holidays. :) Looking forward to seeing your work as time allows you!

Alright, it's a deal then, I'll open the January challenge ;)
It's funnt cause the evening of December 31st is New Year in Russia (as big as Christmas in the US and other countries), so 1st of January is usually a lie-in day, you don't do anything and get up very late. But I plan to get myself together and post the challenge

What is ril?

Thank you! I'll be very glad if my ideas urge more people to join in :)

Oh... I am not travelling these holidays, my hubby and me did that in 2015 and 2016 :) then our baby was born and we didn't really travel. Maybe next year :)
I have already posted some ;) I plan to keep posting though I do feel my works look childish :clear:
