View Full Version : Current Project - WIP

I know there are lots of problems with the image, but I want to persevere with it. It is the largest image I have attempted - 75cm x50cm.

The image is of a turtle emerging from water, with only head and one shoulder out of the water.

I will be working on the eye, and nostrils, and the neck in the next couple of weeks. I have matched the colours on the head, and they seem pretty close, but look to deep/dark to me. I feel I should take them back to stage 1 or 2 colours.

Unfortunately, I can't locate the master image.

Stage 3

I like stage 3 so far. It almost stands alone as a semi abstract with the nice pastel colors and cell shapes. It may just be me but I cant tell where the turtle ends and the water begins because all the cell shapes could be turtle shell and skin texture. If you want to go more realistic maybe do a contour outline of the turtle features. You can always soften edges later

Thanks for your reply.

What you describe are the hard bits - most of the turtle is a blur under the water. I decided to keep it that way, but am thinking about creating a new setting that is clearer.

What they've all said. I think it's got a great abstract look.

Thanks for all your comments. I located the original digital pic. I'm not trying for an exact copy.

A challenging subject. Your painting is looking good. Maybe just go over the under water parts with more blue.

Looking great so far...

 The lower blue section is doing my head in. I think you are spot on - I'm just not feeling brave at the moment. Going to leave it for a couple of weeks.

Cheers Mark. Appreciate your comment.

Super. Really like the way the colors interact.

Oh wait, I was looking at the bottom image thinking it was latest but I should have been looking at the top one. I think there you just need to refine the areas above water more. I know you are not trying for an exact copy but study the colours in the reference.

Excellent... the composition is great too... looking forward to see it finished

Thank you. I have been looking at it for about a week now, and think I know the colours I will use. Many thanks for your thoughts.

The colour & details are awesome

Thanks winnieful. Appreciate your encouragement.

Very well done so far.

Thanks Gaykir, this is the first serious piece I have worked on. Grey hairs are blooming and multiplying :)

Latest image ... not sure if I have actually progressed.

The image is a bit 'greener' and deeper on the face than the art work.

I removed the magenta tones around the edge of the shell - not sure if they should go back, but I think I need to do something to the right hand shell.

Tried to lighten the blues, not finished yet.

All C&C very welcome. http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/28-May-2018/2064401-IMGP4303.JPG

Today's update - having trouble getting blues in there!!

Still problems, but at least today I think I have progressed.

All C&Cs welcome.

It's looking great. Love Sea turtles.

Technically this is now mixed media, as I have used oil pastel in the last few stages.

Still a few bits to blend, but I am thinking that this is about as finished as I can get ATM. Luckily it is going to someone I know. I have warned them I bring oil pastels with me when I visit :clear:

Have come so far in one month. So far yet to travel. But am enjoying the ride. :cat:

Lavendar: many thanks
Johc50: thanks, I found it to keep things in perspective.

I have delivered it to its new owner. Hope to get a pic at its new home next week.

Jennie, the painting looks good but the photo colours vary so greatly, which is the one we should be looking at? :)

06-10-2018, 08:34 AM
Have just seen this post. Now realise how confusing it was. The top image was the most current one. I hope to upload the final image tonight.

06-10-2018, 08:35 AM
Cheers, just catching up with this post.

06-10-2018, 08:38 AM
Many thanks Cliff. I'm just catching up with this post. Hope to post the final image in a couple of minutes. I think I 'messed it up'.

This is my final turtle - although I have reserved the right to touch up if I ever visit it in its new location.

The new owner is a turtle rescue volunteers and this is Harry, she is happy, as the eye is correct for this turtle, and the head sections are almost accurate :(

The further I went the harder it got to be accurate. Happyish ... but not content.

06-10-2018, 10:15 AM
As long as the owner is happy. It is a good painting.

I think this turned out really nice..

Thanks Katie, feeling a bit down, might do another one and see the difference.

Are you not happy with it then?

06-18-2018, 12:32 AM
Hi Katie, yes and no. It is definitely the best large piece I have done. But, I think it is lacking something. Personality.

Because the new owner wanted me to follow the pic as much as possible, I didn't get to follow my 'gut'. Maybe that's it.

Cheers Mark
