Hi Derek, I always look forward to seeing your work, it is a real tonic. But I know now how you achieve such results. You are using magic, plain and simple, you are a magician.

Exceptional work Derek. Every color and value is perfect and every detail in its place and the composition is spot on. Its almost like you built the house plank by plank. This is one for a technique text book.

Wonderful! I find this kind of painting really very interesting as one is left wondering Who lived here? What happened etc etc.

Now, I am interested in your shadows. I have no clue how to do shadows. In the top left you have a dark diagonal shadow...can you say how you did that? I mean, did you use the same colour as the grey wood but just added a bit of black..what colour did you use? any tips? or links would be appreciated..thanks

Katie: Ok: I will reveal my "secret". One of may favorite products is Golden
Transparent shading gray. Wow, you put on a layer with a bit of matte medium and you get a nice gentle shade......or you keep adding the stuff in layers to get as dark as you want. Intended for air brush, but I use it all the time for all kinds of shadows. Nice thing is; it maintains the color underneath.

Superb, with two added attractions, the demo and the secret.

All the well-rendered detail tends to obscure the strength of your compositions. It really jumps out in the early photos of this painting, though.

So, I looked up that product on amazon.ca can't believe the price compared to .com... I'm going to be visiting a friend in the U.S. in the near future, will look for it there.

I took an acrylic workshop yesterday so showed the instructor this and some others, said I want to paint like this by the end of the day...

No one I've talked to seems to be able to show me how to get the same effects Derek does, not just the amazing work/details but the smooth glossy look.

Jon: thanks very much and Cliff as well.
Kathy: I appreciate that. I really don't like gloss. I use a satin finish on most paintings. Thanks for your support.

I just picked this painting up on Saturday; 5th ave. NYC. Salmagundi Gallery. It was on view for about 3 weeks. A major acrylics and casein show. It was nice to see all the work.

........
I thought you used a gloss medium when painting... you don't use any medium at all until the end then just finish the painting with a a layer of satin finish?

thanks heaps
