Following lots of advice and some constructive criticism I have re-visited it and as I could not decide between Sailboats and gulls I decided to include both.
(Cliff, the boys are in the boats)

The birds are working very well. Nicely rendered and arranged.
Bluefish will like the sailboats.

Steve....you did an excellent job on those 'gulls'.....very realistic and bring the tractor into view again while watching the flight of the gulls...
the water now appears more like a bay...nice improvement..;)

Thanks Cliff, Thanks Blue.

The birds feel so natural and bring life to the scene! Personally, I would remove those big sails on the left and only keep those two smalls ones.

What a difference those few details make. Those gulls are outstanding.

Thanks Chris, your comments are appreciated.

Feels complete now. Nice job, Steve.

I am inclined to agree. Thanks Mark

The gulls make all the difference, Steve. Well painted.

Sorry Gayle, I thought I had replied to your comments earlier, thank you the gulls do make a big difference, but I donít think Blue would forgive me if I removed the big sailboats. He wanted a regatta.
04-30-2018, 04:13 AM
Thank you Margaret I agree, I donít know why I was hesitant in the first place.
04-30-2018, 06:17 AM
Steve.....please fell free to do whatever you wish with YOUR painting...we only comment on what we would do......your 'gulls', like the tractor are 'outstanding'....but I live at the beach and sailboats sell very well..if I lived in Texas, I would have suggested some 'cattle' in that field and a few oil rigs in the water area....

The gulls are an excellent addition Steve and the water much improved ....... like Gayle though, not convinced al all about those big sails on the left - the dominate and, I suspect, are really out of proportion!
Sorry friend!:( .......... :)

Blue, It was just a tongue in cheek comment to Gayle. I like water of any kind in my paintings so the sailboat idea appealed to me. All I can say is I am glad you donít live in Texas.

Hi Maureen, I have just brought the painting into the house and Karen said it was lovely but she wasnít sure about the big sails. So I agree with you and Gayle, the big sails will have to go.
As I have just said to Blue I welcome all comments good or bad. But I appreciate the decisions are up to me. I really enjoy get feedback and people putting forward their ideas. I may not act on them but I can store them in my memory for a later project. Although I might pass on Texan oil rigs.

The gulls really are a nice addition.
This may be the first time someone took blue's advice about adding sailboats lol.

Steve....if you notice I refrained from commenting on the 'large sailboats'....Maureen was right on..small, white, misty sail boats would not distract from the basic subject matter....the large sails are out of proportion and the color pulls the eye over there away from the subject matter.....
I think ,if you correct this small flaw, it will be an outstanding painting...
no, I wouldn't care to paint oil rigs either.... but have done tons of sailboat paintings.....

^^^^^ ...... of course, I agree!!!!!!!;);):D

I agree re the big sailboats..as we say in Yorkshire "you've over-egged the pudding"
04-30-2018, 04:11 PM
Thanks Katie, yes I think your right, I over eggs it. But I have learned a lot from this project and the big sails have gone.

The gulls made it right. Lots of tractors working in our local fields and they are always followed by flights of gulls. Glad the very big sails have gone. May we see it now please? I really like this painting.:)

Thank you Mararetta, yes I will post it first thing in the morning
