Acrylic on 22"x16" Hardboard. Couldn't make my mind up whether to include gulls behind the unit. Yes or No?
C & C Welcome

Very nice. Personally, I dont think I would put any gulls in there because there is a real sense of distance and isolation between the ocean, the field and the tractor and I wouldnt want to break that up.

great work Steve...
04-26-2018, 03:03 PM
Thanks Katie, I what your point.
04-26-2018, 03:06 PM
Thanks Fedetony, Your comments are always appreciated.
04-26-2018, 04:54 PM
Love it. I frequently see birds following behind the farm equipment snatching up the bugs that are exposed by the tilling.
04-26-2018, 05:28 PM
Thanks Gayle, Pleased you like it.
04-26-2018, 05:30 PM
Agree with Katie. The gulls would tend to draw the viewer's gaze to the background
04-26-2018, 05:35 PM
Let me get this out of the way, first. If you're going to add gulls, put in a few boys also.
Steve, that tractor is amazing. You seem to have a real affinity for machinery with a really human touch.
Do you think the tractor would pop even more if the horizon were softer? Just a thought ...
04-26-2018, 06:19 PM
I agree with Cliff about that 'tractor'....magnificent...
now your question....if it were mine I'd add a sailboat regatta in that vast open ocean....two small boats going off to the right, a fewcoming into the picture from the left and a limited amout in the center area....
the center of interest is the tractor but behind it is ?????.....IMHO, it needs something and faint sailboats bring out the nautical nature of the area...
04-26-2018, 08:00 PM
You really nailed the tractor down to the last detail like the tire tread and shade of yellow on the tiller attachment. Only thing that is missing is the ground behind the tiller doesn't look tilled. Or is the lighter foreground the tilled area? I would imagine the field would be swarming with gulls. Really great spot for a farm. Beautiful work.
04-26-2018, 09:44 PM
Beauty in the details, and a lovely scene!
04-26-2018, 11:59 PM
Really lovely painting Steve, and I am for the gulls behind the tractor.
04-27-2018, 04:38 AM
I admire your detail and precision.
04-27-2018, 05:09 AM
Details are amazing. Beautiful.
04-27-2018, 05:20 AM
Thank you Bill, Appreciate your comments but I am still not sure, the gulls would be in the foreground trailing the tractor. But there is something missing in the background??
04-27-2018, 05:23 AM
Cliff, Thank you for those kind words. I take on board your comments about the horizon and I agree, I will soften it some.
04-27-2018, 05:36 AM
Hi Blue, Thanks for your comments, I was having sleepless nights debating gulls or no gulls and now you throw sailboats into the mix, arrh! .
As I said to Bill I agree there is something missing and that sea is a massive area of emptiness, so that could be it.
04-27-2018, 05:44 AM
Thanks Chris for your kind comments, yes I will look at tilling the ground behind the tractor. Another one for gulls.
04-27-2018, 05:46 AM
Pine Cone, Thank you for your comments.
04-27-2018, 05:48 AM
Thank you Margaret, another one for gulls.
04-27-2018, 05:50 AM
Thank you kindly Thomas.

Thanks Mark, appreciate your comments.

Steve...that 'sailboat regatta' will take care of the horizon line also...it will break it up and you won't have to lighten it....personally, I think more than gulls are needed in that massive expanse of ocean....
when people look at the painting, they see the tractor but what else to move around other areas of the painting....the regatta, lightly, misty painted would bring their vision deep into the painting....
plus, it can be sold two classes of buyers...those who like 'farm scenes' and those who are interested in seascape type paintings....the best of both worlds...
04-27-2018, 07:18 AM
Good advice Blue, thank you for that.
04-27-2018, 09:16 AM
Very good work! Gulls are a common sight in fields but not sure if you need them.
04-27-2018, 12:03 PM
Hi, I have changed my mind :D
On reflection, I agree with blue that a sailboat or two, and maybe some gulls as well would look great...it all depends on what kind of look your after.
04-27-2018, 12:15 PM
04-27-2018, 12:17 PM
Hi Katie, It is one or the other and I am leaning towards sailboats at the moment.
But things may change.
04-27-2018, 02:19 PM
Steve.....to confuse the issue a little further.....you could have a flock of gulls coming in from the left(very small), circling toward the field and a few on the field behind the tractor, eating the remnents....these would cover up a portion of that large blank sea area....
your painting, so your choice....'sailboats' or 'gulls'......:)
04-27-2018, 02:52 PM
It is going to be one or the other, I think I will play around with it before I make a final decision.
04-27-2018, 04:35 PM
Might as well add my two pennorth!!!
Nice! The tractor is excellent and obviously the focal point but Blue is right that you need to carry the eye around the work.
In England, you'll nearly always see gulls wheeling around the tractor and ploughed earth, so for me, that would be the sensible choice!
The sea ... the horizon needs to be straight and level and the water in the bay is a bit artificial, not up to the standard of the rest, so spoils the pic with those wavelets ... too obvious!:)
Gulls would link sea, sky and ground and a regatta wouldn't be needed;)
04-27-2018, 04:50 PM
Steve....what I do in a situation like this is to draw in the new subject matter with 'white chalk'....then you can look at it and wipe off with a damp cloth... then draw in another subject, utilizing the chalk...see which one you like best, then paint that one in....'white chalk' doesn't affect the painting and wipes off easily....
best of luck with your decision...can't wait to see if it's gulls, boys(for Cliff) or a regatta.....

Thank you Maureen for your constructive criticism, I will take on board your comments. That is my problem, I am just fine when I have a reference photo to work from, but the background on this picture is from a memory of my last visit to Cornwall. I have had some good feedback on this and I can see a lot more work is to be done.
04-28-2018, 03:48 AM
Another good piece of advice, thanks Blue I will try that.
04-28-2018, 09:07 AM
Steve - have a look in the RIL and see if there are any similar 'bays' images you could use - try 'countries' first, then try 'Oceans, Seas'.
04-28-2018, 09:49 AM
Steve....if you take out the 'waves', you can fill the water in and paint a few small boats moored there....a natural scene you would see at the 'Bay'...but I'd do that with the 'gulls idea'....as I write, I'm looking at a bay scene on the wall with three small boats, with mast, moored in the bay area....
04-28-2018, 12:12 PM
Thanks Maureen I will have a look.
04-28-2018, 12:15 PM
Thanks again Blue, nice idea, l will have a think about that.
04-29-2018, 12:55 AM
The tractor is excellent!
Just a note, the horizon doesn't seem to be level. Not sure if that is your intent or not...I'm also the person who straightens pictures in other people's home so I may have a problem.
04-29-2018, 07:03 AM
Hi Across, Thanks for commenting, yes I had not noticed how much out of level it was. It is back on my easel as we speak, much more work to do on it.
04-30-2018, 10:35 AM
Like your subject. You can always add to the original but keep your theme. Add anything. Dog birds sailboats remember the tractor is your idea. I like the tractor Keep on painting !
04-30-2018, 12:50 PM
Hi, I commented but it appears to have disappeared. Anyway, I agree with you re the large boats!
It looks great!
