I've got a commission for a small painting of a dog, which is awesome, but the reference photo is not the best! I think it's almost finished, but there's something missing and I'm not sure what.

Any advice would be awesome, thank you very much!

i think you've done an excellent job. i've done a few crude PS adjustments to the dog's right eye - the left as you look at the picture - and to the mouth and white by eye on dog's left fwiw

The main difference I see is that the photo has a lot of soft edges, but the painting does not. I don't necessarily see this as a weakness, but it projects a different feeling.

Decent start..
Main thing I would do is fluff the fur into the background with a soft brush.

The spot of light near the dogs back leg shouldn't be there. It looks like light shinning through it's leg.
The Blacks need more value shift. They just look black against that white background.
That front paw is very large. It's from the fisheye of the reference. But it could use some tweaking. That's why i try to take my own reference photo. People don't understand how difficult it is working from a photo like this. You should charge double..

Great job so far. I'm seeing a slight difference in area under nose and shading around nose. I have tried several dog portraits recently and trust me I need a lot of practice so I'm not speaking as any expert😀 Sometimes, however, I can pick up things in others work that I can't in mine. Hopefully I helped a tiny bit. Pam:wave:

I think it's finished! You can't really tell on the photo, but there's a lot more blue tones in the black fur. I had all of the suggestions on here on a sticky note while I painted, haha :)
