View Full Version : Fun City

Hi everyone -
See what you think of this. Painted over an old one!

The sky and the street are really very dark purple, although they might look black on your monitor.

18x24 oil.

and Thanks.

the neon-ish glow gives it an almost digital vibe and the softness of oils counters that notion nicely. i'm not normally a fan of cityscapes or neon-esk, but for some reason, which i'll have to contemplate, this appeals to me quite a lot.

Well done! Its fabulous. I love your colour choices and there is a real sense of activity and movement as well.

Very well done.

I really like this. Is it from your imagination? Well done. Great color!

en plein air?
the architecture seems completely organic, just the right amount of messy, but it's
the light. i really like it, makes me visualise its source, man made or otherwise
- just like looking at a real landscape.

Very different and a little magnetic. La said it with "neon-ish". It seems to glow. A very Fun City.

You can really feel the mass of the buildings. The luminosity of the paint makes it feel alive.

Nice - fast paced and alive, love the colours

I love your urban night scene!

La_ and Bilateral - I did want to emphasize the neon of city lights, though the photo may be overemphasizing it a bit -- not quite as strong an effect IRL. So nice of you to comment. Many thanks.
Katie, John - Thank you!
Artchrispy - yes, all imagination, you guessed it! Thanks a lot.
Ronsu - Love your choice of words. I was afraid that my feeble attempts at 'organic' wouldn't mix well with the hard, neon effect. Glad you liked it.
graphicali and laf.art - 'alive' is what I was reaching for, thanks so much for the encouragement.

Very alive, vibrant with activity, love the luminous glow.

Kay - Many thanks!
Jim - I am so grateful for your feedback.

The others have said so much better than I, but there is a lot here that cannot be expressed in words.

You can feel the human presence, movement and warmth, even though there is not a soul in sight.

I like it.

I'm back for another look.

I hear Phil Collins singing "In The Air Tonight" this is nice and I like it.

The buildings flow perfectly drawing you into the center down the street.

Jim - Thanks!
Boafamily - I love that song - maybe I'll steal it for a title of another city painting! Thanks for your kind comment.

So I sent the photo of this painting to a gallery and thought you guys might be interested in the response:

"I think the city one is really fun but donít know how easily it would sell."

Not sure what I'm supposed to make of that. I will talk to them in person at some point and hopefully find out what they're driving at. Perhaps it's just too dark or too weird.

Anyway, thanks to all of your wonderful comments, I am going to re-title the painting "City Alive". Better, huh?

(Boafamily - I played some Phil Collins while painting yesterday...)
