Question please. When painting trees in the distance, should I go dark then lighter on top.?

Depends where the light is coming from..... but keep differences less rather than more, you don't want them coming to the front.

Usually lighter and muted colors the farther away for most objects..
Depends on how far, many miles , a mile, a block away..hard to say for sure..
With acrylics you can easily retouch with a lighter or darker layer quite soon if you think it would look better in the painting..
Some variation due to light & shadows is another factor..
