Greetings These were some quick sketchy cityscapes made from vacation photos last year, but never shared. I m on the verge of revisiting impressionism so dug them out. (Actually Im thinking of trying representational Chinese brush painting and was thinking the first two are in that vein. I m inspired by this photographer who made his prints look like paintings https://www.flickr.com/photos/lythia/sets/72157608924394296/)
I'm not sure if these first two paintings make sense to the viewer without seeing the reference .

Maybe went too blue with the sculptures? The intention was to grey them down but I never did.

Love the high contrast values seen in each of these city and monument scenes, Chris. I think you have mastered it for sure. Truly impressive!

I like these impressions, Chris. They remind me of someone's work, but I just can't quite remember the artist's name.

Your first one in particular reminds me of Sargent. If you haven't looked at his watercolors of Italy recently, esp. Venice, take another look. On the second one, recheck the drawing. It looks to me as if the building is too small relative to the sculptures. I like the blue idea, maybe try some greyer blues and some purples as well? Keep it up!

These are loose and still convincing. The first is the one that sings for me.

Thanks for the suggestion about the Sargent watercolors. They make me want to travel around and sketch. I think I m going to study his palette more. For limited palette tonal paintings they seem so warm and colorful. You're right about the building too. I enlarged the foreground vase sculpture and moved it closer which appears to have thrown off all the proportions. I would have been better off enlarging the building.

Thanks again!
