Hi Guys!

It's been a while since I posted, but here's a new painting I just completed. The work depicts a mission during the Vietnam War by VA-163 the "Saints", led by Commander Bryan Compton. On 27 Aug 1967, the Saints attacked the Hanoi Thermal Power Plant with six A-4E Skyhawks armed with Walleye glide bombs. Downtown Hanoi was the most heavily defended target in North Vietnam. All aircraft attacked the power plant from different directions simultaneously, and several suffered severe battle damage. After escorting the damaged aircraft out of the area, Commander Compton returned to downtown Hanoi and circled the power plant twice at low level, taking pictures with a hand held camera for battle damage assessment. Attached is one of the photos taken from his aircraft. For this mission, both Commander Compton and Lt Cdr Busey were awarded the Navy Cross.

The painting depicts Cdr Compton's aircraft circling the power plant, under heavy AAA fire. The work is acrylic on canvas, 24 X 18 inches.

All comments are very welcome!

HI Trumper! Thanks for your comments! Actually the aircraft was light gray on the upper surfaces and white on the underside. Reason for the white was the aircraft designed for nuclear delivery, and the white was intended to reflect the brightness of the explosion. The older B-52's used the same pattern, but polished aluminum on the upper surfaces.
Thanks again!
Jim

Thank you so much Jim and Neil!

I wanted to do this one for a while, it was quite a story. Actually I still get to work A-4's pretty regularly, as they come through the base where I work as an Air Traffic Controller. The Navy has a contract with a company to use A-4s as aggressers..

Thanks again!
Jim
