Welcome artists!

Here is a quick recap of what The Spotlight is all about!

The Spotlight is an activity thread for pastel artists of all experience levels working from photos chosen by a monthly host. Most months, the host will choose photos from only one subject, putting that subject into “the spotlight,” so to speak! For example, one month the subject will be painting water, another month will spotlight flowers, etc.

Some months, rather than spotlight a subject, the focus will be on a challenge of some sort. In those cases, we might have a wider variety of photo references, but “the spotlight” will be on the challenge itself.

Since this is a group activity, we can pool our knowledge and resources, and grow as artists in a fun, “no-pressure” atmosphere.

And, remember, no critiques unless specifically asked for.

The intent is to have fun, try new things, experiment, and perhaps most of all, to see what our friends and colleagues are painting from the same reference material!

Please note: The photos this month were taken by me or are from the Reference Image Library. You have permission to use the photos as reference to create your artwork and to sell them and/or exhibit them. The actual photos still retain the copyright of the photographer. So you cannot copy the photo to your blog, for example, without the permission of the photographer, or digitally alter or reproduce the photo for any purpose other than for your personal use, with the exception of crops, digital alterations and posts of these photos within "The Spotlight" thread.

This month’s Spotlight is on…Fall Colors!

Every year, here on the Spotlight, we take a month to explore and celebrate Fall Colors! I hope that where you live you get to experience the changing colors of fall - as the green foliage turns to yellow, orange and red!

This year, alas, here in the northeast, we experienced beautiful summer-like whether right into mid-October, so the fall colors were more muted compared to most years. But I was able to find a few spots - I hope - that gave me some nice reference photos for this month.

As always, if you have your own references on the topic, feel free to use them as well!

Here are the references (all photos by me):

As primarily a landscape painter I spend lots of time with blues and greens...
it's always fun to break out the warm colour palette for this annual challenge!
Looking forward to it Don!

Hi Don,
I am sorry I was not able to post in the last thread after all. Starting again after so many months is difficult, I feel like I have forgotten everything... But thanks to you I put my pastels from the drawer back on the table and started to practise again. Thank you!

Hi Don,

seems a bit quiet here this month. Everybody's too busy?
I do not have much time either, but the references are so nice.
And today I skipped housework and painted one. :)

All kinds of pastels on PastelMat (30x40cm)

Esther! It's wonderful! The subtle touches of orange, off to the right side, pull it all together.

I love how you've heightened the little yellow tree to give us a focal point! Nice!

Thank you for your kind comments Christine, Don, Karen and Leslie.

I am glad, that the orange in the background trees as well as the brightening of the yellow tree works.

I hope some more will join the Challenge.

Esther, you did such a great job on that fall scene. I’m envious!

I hope to join you all very soon, at least for a quick painting.

Meanwhile, Happy Thanksgiving to all. Many blessings.

If anyone wants to relax and watch some orcas or perhaps a humpback whale...sometimes live or sometime in “highlight” clips....go to Exlore.com live cam orcas. The scenery and sunsets are beautiful too. There are usually four live cams but sometimes only highlights. The cams are in British Columbia Canada. Nice site. Beautiful scenes. Enjoy!

Sorry, it’s Explore.org.

Happy Thanksgiving or "Black Friday"...any pastel sales?

Squeaking in before the end of the month with my contribution....
loosely:lol: based on one of my photos.

I'm not too happy with the result...perhaps because I'm working on UART 400 grit....
yes, Don you read that correctly:wink2:... I'm feeling brave enough to go upmarket....
Anyway, C+Cs welcome:)
Rembrandt,Sennelier and Richeson pastels.

Leslie, Very nice! I think it is a bit different from your usual paintings which seem more light and airy, but I think you have given much more mood to the painting than is in the nice reference photo. While the photo is all warmth, your painting has much more warm and cool contrast and the woods become much more mysterious and haunting with those blues in the background! As usual, you have that wonderful color harmony throughout! Nicely done!

Thanks Don, I used the darks for contrast to the warm tones but the trees became a little more brooding than I intended!

Thank you very much for your kind comments Donna, Jay, Fana.

Leslie, you created a warm and mystic atmosphere in your painting.
That is a rare combination.
Still warm and pleasing in the sunlit spot, but there are some winter ghouls lingering nearby.
Well done.

Your painting looks very nice and mysterious, Leslie!

I haven't done many pastels over the summer, about time I start practicing again. First one are the berries, size 6x9", second one 8.5x11.5", NuPastel with water, Rembrandt, Stabilo pencils:

Leslie, I love your interpretation. Dark, brooding, mysterious. I can see this is a museum! I could sit on one of those benches at look for mysterious figures in the woods. I like that very, very much.

Fans, THOSE BERRIES! Popped right off the page onto my table. And your trees are refreshing.

Squeaking another one in before the end of the month....
I've been working on this for most of the month...
the trees looked like bushes for most of the time:lol:
Don, you might find this more typical of my usual approach.
The photo is poor...it's a view that peaks at me along the trail I walk with my pooches.
UArt 400 and a variety of my usual pastels.
C&Cs welcome!

Nice work, Fana, both the berries and the gorgeous fall colored grasses and trees!

Leslie, I like both of your paintings too! The way the leaves lay over the tree shadows in the first one is very appealing. I admire the way you interpreted the photo; you created quite a mood! The second painting looks so very fall-like with the subtle color contrasts. That tall stand of trees deserves to be featured!
