Hi also
I'm still working up to a style of classical, so I don't have anything to add at this time. It will be interesting to watch this forum develop.

Hmmm. Something tells me Arlene is going to be keeping us all on our toes!
We should all remember that this forum isnt just for accomplished classical artists. Anyone and everyone regardless of skill is welcome to post here. I think anyone who aspires to a classical style should feel free to post their work.
I myself am producing student work; most of the art that I post will be geared towards classical training and studies. I am looking forward to learning from some of the more experienced artists who post to the new forum.

Well, as an un-art-educated artist myself, I know what is generally referred to as "fine art." What exactly is classical art... This may be an elementary question for some, but I had never heard the term til Vince asked about it...

Hi Vince, so what is YOUR understanding of classical art? The term makes me think of classical music, refined, educated, harmonious (mostly!).
(By the way, your tinyhead is very handsome and I love that smile! :D )

briefly if you admire those artists who were not modernists and wish to learn more about them, or try and emulate their style or just their techniques, then pull up a chair...
here's a better description...and take a look at the artrenewal link in one of the other threads.

Can watercolours be classical? It seems most art which is described in this way is painted in oils, highly detailed, realistic.

I've seen watercolors that could easily be described as classical, so the answer is yes...heck if colored pencil can, anything can. :)

Hi JustGo and Madmum! Ok Madmum...im blushing now.
The term Classical Art represents a great many styles. Illis struck on a few in the definition on the main forum page. Contemporary, traditional and romantic styles were mentioned but there are lots more.
Arlene left a great link to Craigs post that you might want to check out. I also liked the definition Arlene gave.

Sorry Vince :D I speak my mind online, would never dare to IRL! LOL
Is this anything close to classical? It's realist, I think, but beyond that?

Oh wow a new forum! Classical even!
Uhmm, can I join in as the American Ambassadress from The Netherlands?
I have spent the better part of the past 3 years admiring the Dutch Masters' work hanging in the museums here ( sounds like I'm applying for a job...lol)
Some of that admiring has rubbed off on me and onto my CP work (I think).
My forte, however, is pottery/ceramics and I was fortunate to attend a workshop at the Royal Delft Porcelain Factory, in Delft, this past summer......wow was that an experience!
Looking forward to admiring your works too!

I am sooo psyched about this forum. Have always totally admired and been awed by the old masters, already I've learned from some of the links you guys have provided. Can't wait to learn more and apply it.
One question for those more knowledgable than I...can "classical" art be done with acrylics? I love oils but not the fumes and the wait for it to dry....

see the thread i started with my wip halo...it's acrylic...anything can be used...technically if it's not oil, or drawing media... it's not, but this is the 21st century...digistyle even posted a digital painting he did using classical techniques of color.
Thanks Arlene, I will check out your thread! I have always loved a nice thickly painted old masters type of painting but I always revert back to the "every hair" in acrylic thing...it's hard to change what you've done for a long time! :)

Only 21 pages?
I'm sorry JJ.
I was talking about the thread here in classical art about the bird of paradise. I'm using a traditional technique (grisaille and glazing of layers)

I wanted to introduce myself and say hello to everyone. It's wonderful to find a group of classical realists on WC. I am looking forward to seeing your work. I am in the process of moving to a more classical style. I would love to hear of any suggestions.
