View Full Version : Wales 2017

just back from a week painting with friends in Wales :) We went last year and had such a good time that we decided to repeat

Day one, stopped in my favourite valley and did a sketch of the mountainside as it tumbles steeply down - see the tiny single track road at the bottom for scale - the valley continues steeply down beyond that (and up as well)

I'd planned to work on a bigger scale, as last year, but the wind made it difficult, so I ended up working in an 11 inch square sketchbook most of the time.

watercolour, ink and coloured pencil

and a detail from the bottom left, blown up and drawn in strong coffee, looking more at the abstract shapes and marks

and on our last day, at a cafe at Pen Mon

drawn with a ballpoint pen, quickly, whilst eating a scone with jam and clotted cream :smug:

Looking across the Menai Strait from Anglesey at Bangor and the end of the long pier, with the mountains rising behind, partially obscured by low cloud

mixed media in 11 inch square sketchbook on a windy, chilly day

Penmon lighthouse. Tide high but still rising.

small cove near Treaddur Bay - Rhos Colyn I think. Oil in sketchbook, done with palette knife on lovely sunny day

Love the three last ones. Really love it!

Very nice, Vivien. I like the texture of the foliage.

Great to see you return to Wales again this year. I'm hoping to get back there during Autumn. :crossfingers: Ogwen happens to be my favourite valley too, haha. By the angle of the first sketch it looks like you're up on the lower ridges above the visitors center, with my beloved Y Garn looming out of shot to the left?

I like all the sketches so far, but the way you've handled the foreground flora in the last sketch is just magical. Such nice colours too.

Hope to see a lot more soon.

thank you :) around there yes, only visited 'my' valley once this year - looked at lots of lovely coves on Anglesey and across the Menai

This one started life as a full page but I didn't like the composition so took the scissors and glue to it :)

Super sketches Vivien.

thanks Doug :)

from Beaumaris, looking back at the mainland across the Menai Strait, a cool windy afternoon so I worked in the car

from Penmon as the clouds obscured the mountains across the Menai. Deganwy visible in the first one but disappearing a few minutes later (painted from there last year with the corner of Anglesey, where this one was done, showing in the distance)

These are really good sketches, Vivien. It was interesting to see parts of the country I may never get a chance to visit.

Thanks :) so many beautiful parts of Britain and so hard to get to all of them

and experiment drawing with coffee - I'm assured it's lightfast

08-09-2017, 04:01 PM

looking down at the harbour wall at Amlwch (pronounce it Amlook)

did it for the challenge of the perspective and textures - the colours were very muted and didn't interest me enough so I just did this section of the view and stayed monochrome. Friend was enjoying it or would have moved on soonerl

water soluble graphite

nearly went over the cliff as I stood up to leave

Loving the new additions. Do you just dip a brush into your flask to paint those coffee impressions? I love them.

08-13-2017, 06:57 AM
I used 3 of those individual sachets of coffee in one of those small jars that they give you in cafes with jam in, topped up with boiling water. Pure guesswork but it was about right :)

It now lives with my inks as I really like it

I asked Alfredart if it was lightfast as he uses it a lot and he assured me it is.

This one was also drawn with coffee too and I hazed white pencil softly over the further rocks to push them away a bit and create distance. (should havew thought ahead and had a diluted version) Colour is pastel pencil. something I don't use much but useful for this.

near Trearddur Bay - the lemony bit is a huge patch of evening primroses in bud

I like this one.

Simple but explicit.

They are beautiful Vivien, I have never explored Anglesey except Beaumasrs and Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch:)

08-13-2017, 01:25 PM
Thanks - :) now did you type that from memory :wink2:

The view back from Beaumaris is lovely, I did sketch from there

oh do explore up the west coast are lovely bays - and the east but more villages - and the lighthouse/bird sanctuary at South Stack is great with a nice cafe in the car park

We just looked at the Ordnance Survey maps and google earth and then set off exploring. The interior of Anglesey is nice but not special, it's the coast that was great.

There were 6 of us but we went off in different directions each day, not sticking all together so people came back exchanging info on good places to go as we shared work in the evenings :)

This year the men did lots of industrial scenes and Conwy Castle, while the rest of us looked mainly at the coast and mountains

Certainly not Vivien, I got as far as Llanfair ????

I will certainly make a point of touring Anglesey next time we stay in North Wales.

and this one is across the Menai from Anglesey, looking at Snowdonia, on the way to Penmon

We were told the tide rises from both ends of the strait - which I imagine is why the wave patterns in the sand are unusually at right angles to the water. I'm used to them being parallel

A beautiful sketch Vivien.

Lovely work. If I may, I think the foreground draws the eye a little too much (maybe your intent?), but the way you have rendered it is very appealing.

08-18-2017, 01:30 PM
Makes me want to hop on a train and go. Lovely sketches.

08-18-2017, 03:59 PM
yes it was my intent :) the mountains were a litle hazy in the changeable weather - mist over the mountains, hiding the tops and rain on the way, though still sunny our side of the strait

08-18-2017, 04:01 PM
Raindrop go! it's beautiful

08-24-2017, 09:50 AM
Oh such pretty work! Love the sense of atmosphere. Seems like you were in the northern part?

08-25-2017, 05:38 PM
thanks EP :) - yes north Wales and Anglesey - that's the mountains of Snowdonia you see

08-25-2017, 08:54 PM
Ah ... beauty ... :)

I always love your holiday sketches, Vivien! How fun to see your pieces done with coffee...they are great!

thank you :)
