View Full Version : Rembrandt light

This is an almost finished work done on a Masonite board 12X16 treated with Gesso, and pumice gel and painted grey as described by Ellen Eagle.
I was interested in how Rembrandt used the light in his portraits. Today it is called the Rembrandt triangle or light. This gives a very nice rendition of the person, so I did work using only pastel pencils after watching a video done by Cuon Gnuyen, an artist who has popularized the technique of Verdaccio using pastel pencils. I used Carbotello pastel pencils and for the background Panpastels. I made the portrait in such a way so the point of interest will be on the eyes, nose, and lips. The reference was from Pinterest. C&C are welcomed.

Lovely. You have brought her to life with wonderful skintones. Her eyes are bright and alive. I'd say your mission is accomplished!

Gorgeous! The texture in the background makes her skin look even smoother by comparison.

KAREN, STAPLELIAD, DONNA:
Thank you. In reality the skin is a bit darker than the photo. Well, I think I am done. I believe that using pastel pencils you can accomplish a work quicker and with smooth finishing.

Since I started using the pastel pencils my wife, my main critique, says she likes the soft and smoothest of the skin. By the way I did some bg darkening and by tomorrow it will be completed.

Thank you Charles.
I just added subtle blue tones to the face similar to the background. The side of the face made it blurred to allow more attention to the triangle eyes and the nose with the upper lip. With the use of the pencils with very sharp tips a very soft skin can be rendered.
I am satisfied with the use of pastel pencils on a hard board but it probably would have been better to use the paper recommended by Cuon. Thank you

Moises, I looked at some of the paintings of Rembrandt like -his self portrait, the girl with a broom and the face of Jesus , then looking at your painting after I saw the genius in your style of painting. It is remarkable Moises.Accept my humble appreciation.
