View Full Version : WDE June 12, sketches of Maggie and boy meets dog

Thanks for hosting, Christine, and the fun reference photos! These are both in the spirit of. I'm trying to get a handle on gouache, which I find tricky, but I like the idea of them.

The first is 5.5"x8.5" in a sketchbook with toned paper and took about 15 minutes.


The second is 9"x12" and I was practicing just using sepia, ultramarine blue deep, and white. This probably took an hour. I know it's VERY sketchy (and the photo is a bit dark; it's very gloomy today in Portland...)


I may return to that beach scene later this week with acrylics. Hard to resist such an amiable confrontation.

There is always so much energy in your paintings, I love both of these.
I use gouache just like I use acrylics and to me they have very similar characteristics. Fast drying, very forgiving and such vibrant colours. I started using them a few years ago when I went on a tutored art holiday to Nice and gouache was what we used. It took a little practice to get confident with them and I use them all the time now for small pieces especially.

I love the top dog especially! The other one is real nice also.
