A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Paint Your Wagon
Project Leader: Dark_Shades
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Pastels
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

There was a general interest in Painting Cars in Pastels.... having just bought a rather 'nice' looking car myself and asked if I was going to paint it..... The idea for November's Project was born - its NOT just about painting Cars, but a broader spectrum of Transportation! -
Transportation through the Ages, Times, Countries and Cultures, anything we use to get us from 'A' to 'B'.

Some Examples/Ideas:

.....from Viking Ships to the Titanic, Tall Ships, Canal Barges.. Chinese Junks
Trains, Steam Engines, Tubes, Trams, Buses.... Power boats, planes...Bi-planes.... Concorde... Rockets... Hot Air Balloons... Cinderella's Carriage.... Stage Coach..Wagon Trains.... Bicyles...... Roller Blades..... Feet... Legs.. Ski's... Elephants.... Horses... Donkey's.. Dog Teams
..... So I hope I have given you some ideas to get motivated..... so please come and join me in my FIRST ever Project (how do I get myself into these pickles :D)

Dont forget there are tons of images to use freely in WC's Own Reference Library

...... and No Cheating :) ..... all New Works only please!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here! (http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=556)

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Great idea, Dark_Shades. Very interesting subject matter for pastels! I got some ideas already, so I'm headed off to sign up. Dark, you ought to get into pickles more often. :D I do have a question, can I post one picture for two projects?? If not, no big deal there, but if I could,...that would be helpful to know.

Ok i'm in for this one, good start DS looking good, traced it;i should have traced my wagon wheels,i did a sketch of this a while ago,got into all sorts of trouble with the perspective so put it to one side,so when this project came up i thought i would rework it,after all a wagon and a pushair is transport right:D ,anyway went over it with an eraser, took out the angled awning in the background then tried to paint the shapes with pastel, sorta happy with it except for the wagon wheels and push chair:D

http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/Projects/lib/556/progress/14550/tn_TI_Marina_WIP.jpg

Well....I started out very enthusiastic with this one. The ref photo was taken last year about this time. It's the Treasure Island Marina in San Francisco Bay with the Bay Bridge overhead and the Oakland Hills shrouded in fog in the background. What captured my interest was that it was a very foggy day (we were there to get shots of the SF skyline for a project I was doing for my brother's Cat Club and it was too foggy to even see the skyline) and when I turned to look at the Marina suddenly the sun was out just over the island. The Marina just looked like a jewel in the sun with the bridge soaring overhead. Now I'm about half way with this (it's not a quickie) and I'm wondering WHY am I painting this? It seems like a very sterile painting, not even a painting, more an illustration with no purpose. Does this have merit for continuing? Can I go do something more fun? This is a lot like work!

Well Mikki, for what it is worth....... I really like this.... but I can understand how you feel, as feel a bit the same way about the car I am doing...... I think that though this may not be 'arty'.... it has and does show alot of skill...... the effect of the metal.... the distance/perspective...... lighting..... shadows.... shapes.... angles..... etc...... have you seen it as the tiny head...... its amazing.... it looks like a photo....... something I personally can appreciate ....... perhaps take a well earned break and have some fun with something..... and come back (If you want to) refreshed to this

..... from Me, well done Mikki

Wow, Guillie, this is very good! You have the subject and the pose down very well and the colors are wonderful. Even though she is sitting tying her skate there seems to be a lot of energy and action here.

Dawn, thanks for the kind encouragement. I will probably finish this out of sheer stubbornness but I may well take a break and do something more like fun.

Mikki - you didn't pick an easy one did you? The bridge alone would have killed me - I can never get those things straight and yet you did a fantastic job.

Is it art? YOu bet it is.

Should you take a break - I think so... you've obviously got to do that in order to fall in love with it again. I definitely think it's worth continuing on.

YOu've got such great detail and color in this piece - keep going.

Uhh...ermm...based on recent heated debate in another thread I'm no longer sure there is any merit in having my work look like a photo. the only comfort I can take from the above comment is that it must mean I'm right on with my perspective.

Thank you Guillie for the comments. Obviously, I do not have the patience for this either. My eyes are crossed and my head hurts. This photoreal stuff is not my piece of cake...

I'm off now to find something fun to do like design my Christmas cards...

Thanks, Kat. Surprisingly, the bridge was fairly easy although when I started I expected it to be trouble. What's a real pain are all those stinking boats! I have decided to commit to finishing but I am going to let it cool for a bit and play with something else.

Barb,DS and Impete, thanks for your comments,i had a lot of fun with this,i dont know what it will be like when i paint in some sausage fingers, thats why i stopped , i thought oh no not fingers i'm too tired to do fingers now:D ,i might do some quick hand and finger drawings for the weekly thread, get some practice in.
DS,i think you car will certainly rattle, dont know about the shake,it's a beautiful painting tho, like it a lot,i'd leave it now and get on to the next one,my initial thoughts was to do trains and boats and planes, isn't that a song:D plus a car so that would be 4 and iv'e only done the train so expect something from the sky, something from the sea,i'm not telling you if it will be above it or below:) and if i get time something for the road:D

Kyle I guess I do have a style even my daughter and her boyfriend says the same thing. They all kind of look alike is what they said. I found someone in Pastel Journal this month that reminded me of my work. Joan Ranzini

http://www.artzites.com/Flatwork/Joan%20Ranzini/september2003/JRanzini_3cannoli.jpg An example if you don't have the new pastel journal magazine

What do you think? Does my work and her's sort of look alike?

Don't worry about it Wendy - we have all month to finish - at least you have a subject picked out - I am still waffling back and forth on what to do.

Luvy: I see somewhat of a resemblance - but I think Joan's stokes are looser and more impressionistic. I think what is making your work "look the same" to your family is the mat board you are using. It's soft and therefore your work looks soft. I'm not sure if I've ever seen you do a WIP - do you blend?? Layer?? If it is starting to look the same, maybe you want to go in the other direction and try something different.

Luvy
11-05-2003, 05:49 PM
Kyle I've been using vellum paper lately. This one is on vellum paper. It's Borden and Riley Bristol vellum I like it. And I do blend but build up my colors as well. Shoot I don't know how I do it I just do it LOL I'd never be a teacher LOL HEE HEE
Bnoonan I was just saying color wise and the sort of detailed type but not complete detailed work she does reminded me of my style.

Mikki Petersen

Luvy, I think your style is all your own. If it makes you happier to think your work is like anothers, that's okay, but rest assured...a Luvy is unmistakably a Luvy.

Hi there,

No I didn't disappear off the face of the earth, you guys aren't that lucky. :D

I haven't started anything yet, I'm waiting for my new supplies to come in so I'm not sure when I'll be able to get to it. And on top of that, I'm going to try and incorporate some of Gaka's techniques into my style of painting. lol, I might disappear after that. So my piece might be very late or if it's really, really bad, you'll never see it.

I have same feeling sometimes with my work. So nowadays if I think that my work is too static I take a big brush full with acrylic color and start dripping
or splashing the color over the half finsihed piece.
If there is too much water I let it dry for a few minutes and then put a sheet of newspaper on top to suck up the excess
water. After that everything looks different. Then I start to built up again.

There is a place here in the Mother Lode of CA called Daffodil Hill (really!). the owners of this ranch have planted hundreds and hundreds of bulbs all over a hillside and interspersed them with antique farm implements and other "junk". Each Spring, they open their ranch to the public to come and enjoy all their beautiful flowers and it is FREE. This painting is from a photo I took there. I want it to be in a loose and sketchy style so I only used very soft pastels and no blending. To my eye it looks unfinished, but my resident art critic (hubby) says it looks good. C&C welcome.

YES! I did enjoy it very much and only spent about three hours on it which is a quickie for me. I think there might be a lesson here about painting subjects you are really pumped up about. While I enjoy the challenge to stretch my skills by trying different things, I most love landscapes and flowers and that's invariably where my best stuff comes from. I've noticed that a lot of the gallery painters have a particular focus or subject they concentrate on, and maybe that's why.

Thanks, DarkShades. I'm not so certain I can tell the difference between bike and car at this point, but I do know that chrome is worse than a mirror! In fact, if you look closely at my reference image, I'm reflected in the chrome taking the photo!!

I will take some "creative liberty" and edit myself out. :D

Back to the easel.

I must be outta my mind to have tried this! Thank God for days off... otherwise, this would be finished sometime in January. Next time, I'll just go out riding.

And now, I realize I have committed a grave sin: I have used up my white pastel and have no more! Off to the store for me... once I wash off the pastel smudges from my face.

I have another white pastel, so I'll be back at work on this in a little while. In the mean time, what I would like to know is how do you get those little thumbnails to show up? I copy and paste the URL in from my image project page, but the thumbnail doesn't come with it. Please share that little trick.

I also think its very difficult to navigate to and through projects.... this is the way I do it, not sure if its correct or not.......

you need to go back to the original 'name' of Project Thread

http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_details.php?proj_id=556
(which you would think the sign up area would be.... but thats not the case lol) .... and the bottom there are a number of options...... you need to pick the 'browse' either for finished or progress... that will then open up and you will see all the people listed who have submitted works..... also an option to 'click here' to view..... you get to see all the images in a small version...... click on an image that takes your fancy

http://www.wetcanvas.com//Community/Projects/browse_progress.php?proj_id=556 .........
.... that will then open up into a bigger image...... and there in the heading you will see options.... one being .... '

Comment' ...... click on that one, and then the little chat box will open up, automatically carries a thumbnail of the image along with it....... a couple of lines to delete with your own comments....... Voila!! ...... simple  :D

You are coming along fantastically! I also play with oil pastels, but to tell you the truth, they don't necessarily make metal look more shiney ;) I like the buttery effect of oil pastels, but blending the colors is much easier in soft pastels (at least it is for me).

Be brave! I like how the car is now reversed... this will make you think when using your reference photo. Keep posting your progress.

Quick question?? If I find after a few more layers of colours that I still don't like the oil pastel effect?? can I put soft pastels over top?? or do I have to start over??

Alachua Artist
11-12-2003, 10:33 AM
umm... I'm not certain that you can put soft pastels on top of oil ones. I've never tried that. Are you able to blend the oil pastels with a q-tip? I couldn't blend them at all, except for smearing the top color into the botom one with the actual stick.

I saw a reference in here about using colour sticks to work pastels, both oil and soft. but I've not seen any reference to mixing the two mediums.

whatthehell.... give it a try. You can ALWAYS start over (again). :D

crazyartist2000
11-12-2003, 10:38 AM
LOL. Thanks Alachua !!
Yes it is not blending very well as of yet

:p
I have started putting colours on thicker now to see if it improves..Looks pretty good from far away with my glasses off LOL:D

Alachua Artist

Now isn't that amazing how well some things look WITHOUT your glasses? I have to paint without mine on as well... it's a bifocal thing. I can't stand to tip my head back to look through the bottom half of these golldarn lenses, and beside, the crick in my neck is worse than my sight!

I'm enjoying your progress. It's going well.

Mikki Petersen

Hi Crazy Artist...You can blend oil pastels by dipping a q-tip in turps and blending with it. This accomplishes both blending and removing the sticky residue that oil pastels leave behind. I would think, once "fixed" thus, you might be able to work over them with soft pastels but I've never tried it.

You did a nice job on this, Crazy. You could work a little more on the background to "settle" your main image. Have no fear... you will not ruin it. ;)

Do you have mineral spirits? You might try experimenting with using that instead of turps - of course, not on your final work, but on a test piece - to see if that will work for blending. I'd like to know your results when you do. I've been looking for someway to blend oil pastels myself.

sundiver
11-12-2003, 05:35 PM
Turps will thin down o.p.s as well as blend them. If you don't like the o.p. surface, you can remove most of it with tirps and paper towel. Then you have an underpainting, and can put soft pastels over it. I don't know if soft pastels will go over o.p. unless you remove most of it first.
If I'm keeping the o.p. on and want to blend, I use a color shaper. I don't think a cotton swab is strong enough to do it.
Haven't even started starting my project submission yet! :D

...and I'm just starting to get ready to start! I haven't even looked at this project much yet- I wanted to be working on it first.
But I've been chicken-hearted about starting.
So here I am, asking for advice.
OK. Here's what it looks like, now, across the lawn from our summer cottage.

Here's a photo of the same spot taken maybe 80 years ago.
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/30-Nov-2003/6393-schoonersi_n_meaowbank.jpg
Those schooners (one on each side of the river) were taking on farm produce.
I'd like to do a painting of it in the past. But the ref is so dark and blurry.
Advice? Is it worth a try?

Sundiver...I think the painting with the schooners would be a wonderful work. You have the ref photo for what the area looks like now and the water in the old pic is pretty well defined and the pier. As for the schooners, you could use other reference photos to define what the schooners should look like. I say GO FOR IT! The result could be amazing!

For some reason I lost track of time. Even though I knew exactly what I was going to do, I of course, waited until the 30th (last day of the month). Uploaded this with 40 min to spare.
This is my husbands "First Love" his 1970 Mustang MACH I.
He had this when we met. We went on our honeymoon in it and sold it when we started having babies. (no back seat).
That same baby (he's 23) can't believe we actually sold it (for an AMC Pacer).
Sooo, this is a gift for my husband that he'll get for Christmas this year.
It's 15" x 10" in soft pastel on Arches CP with a watercolor underpainting.
I had a great time with this. I've never done a vehicle before but plan to do more (he's got a good friend from high school who had a 1969 Roadrunner, also a beautiful car).
Thanks for the opportunity and idea to try this!

Dawn, Pam and Preston. love those old trucks! And yours, too Barb and Stoy! And nougat, ESta and LittleDragon's ships, and Luvy's Amish, forgiven's rickshaw, Guill's carts, SBJ's stillettoes, Igol's "ship", cars, camels, motors, wheels... I'm a month late commenting, but they're all outstanding!
I don't know why I'm so hesitant on mine- I usually just dive right in, and if it doesn't work out I use the back!:). Getting another ref on a schooner is a good idea, Mikki. Thanks for the encouragement.

Uh...hang on...I have 96 NuPastels, two different sets of 48 pastel pencils, about 150 Rembrandts, 90 or so Senneliers, about 100 Great Americal Artworks (my all time favorites) and a few Schminkes and Townsends. This piece was done mostly with GAs and Senneliers which I find I'm working with more and more.

Hi,
I agree, Ersta is like my paper in it's sanded texture. But not in archival quality, or water resistence.

Hi,
I agree, Ersta is like my paper in it's sanded texture. But not in archival quality, or water resistence.

I've become a devotee of the "grey mist" Wallis paper with Colourfix my second choice. I don't know HOW anybody does ANYTHING with "toothless" paper! I like the grey Wallis because it gives me a neutral ground as is or I can wash it with other colors more easily.

I've actually done my own color charts on Wallis, so I have a ready reference of all the pastels in my burgeoning collection (my bank account is hating this new addiction, but I'm loving it!) The color charts seem much more useful on the grey, for some reason...more real or something. But I've never been a fan of white grounds anyway.

Pastellist, your final entry looks great to me! Still lifes are such a good way to study values and color tones. I should do more of 'em. It's hard to find any other "live" model that stays "put" so well.

Oops! My last post was really in response to your earlier still life! Sorry. I like the little ole car, too, however! A little stronger light source one side or the other might add a bit of "drama" to it and I would definitely add some shadow under it to set off the brightness of the car itself. Looks like it was fun to do!

Hi there!

I love the works I have seen so far in this project! Some are very original!

When looking through the projects, I thought of a photo I have taken while on holiday and I immediately thought of using it as a reference for this project. It is not as original as many of yours, but it does also have a very rustic (OLD) feel to it.
