i have been interested in paper models for a while, but i am never satisfied with building someone else's design... so i thought i would try my own. that moose statue looks like the perfect starter!

i am not sure how this will turn out in the end, but i thought i would give you a blow by blow account of what i am up to...

quick sketch ... about 10 minutes to get the shape of the moose pieces...

took the sketch scan into Xara Designer Pro (vector graphics package) to create the pieces...

here are all the moose parts...

now the trick is to make all the parts in three dimensions, and this is the plan for the initial attempt. calculating the right length of that strip of paper between the front and the back of the leg and to wrap it around the curves is the hard part...

the first build.. at least one leg. close but no cigar. the strip was about 1/2 inch too long. i still have to figure out how to taper it. looks like i am on the right track though. this was made using cheap printer paper. the final i think will work best on card stock. if i pull this off, i will post the pattern here. i have invested about 4 hours so far. looks like he will end up about 6" high and 8" long.

i guess technically this is a sculpture. is this a first for the WDE? :p

I'm freaking out! I had exactly the same idea re making a "paper" version of the moose, though mine is intended to be purely digital (partially inspired by some apps on the App Store where they created images for games based on digital versions of paper art and pop-up books, etc.)

The thing is, you've done this so well, so perfectly... You've taken your idea and made it special and amazing. Fantastic realization of your inner dream!!! ZOWIE!!! I can't wait to see this all done up and assembled!!!
