Floral Study, 6x8, on gator board.
I believe a part of working with pastels is to have fun and learn how the medium works. One way is to spend a little time experimenting on various surfaces...using watercolor, oils, pastels or acrylics as an underpainting and glazing with a mixture of hard and soft pastels. This was done on textured gator board with a pastel underpainting (pastels and water) when dried I started dragging pastel sticks over the surface varying the pressure and often rubbing and pushing some of the pastels into the tooth of the paper...just having fun!!

It is beautifully done. Yes but even in experimenting some thing beautiful could be turned out only if there is an underling expertise. It is because you are a good painter that you have created some thing different and attractive.

You created some wonderful texture on that surface, Mike, and it's a gorgeous little painting! Your work always inspires me to examine the edges in my work more closely: not every edge needs to be sharply defined in order to describe the subject. The power of suggestion is strong in this one!

Mike,
Great work, and agreed on using the gatorboard or similar board. This work looks very painterly like oil.

I am learning that when we play we most often make the best art. Your piece is evidence that it is true!

It is true you were playing, I don't know you but I believe there is a strong expertise in your hands, and this painting is the result of it combined with a deep understanding of the medium possibilities!
