I think I saw something like this on a program about the 'crazy' inventions for D day. Smoke like Gas, could be a bit of a two edged sword. If the wind changed you got your own back. In this case the. If bomber can see the target then the target can see the bomber. There are a lot of accounts from the Battleship era of targets being obscured by smoke from gun fire or funnels. This explains the sometimes strange arrangements of masts and spotting tops on the old Battleships. In some cases the spotting tops had to be evacuated because of heat and smoke. I think this is one of those 'seemed a good idea at the time' things
This is HMS Sikh at the Second battle of Sirte where a smoke screen was successful.
